Hi,
I'm exploring the demo version of Ableton Live 5. I'm not familiar with non-linear sequencing at all and I was wondering how could I use Jamstix with Live.
I was able to jam but I have no clue about how to use arrangements and so on. Live users: how do you use Jamstix?
Thanks! |

Well, I´d say if you are able to get Jamstix going and jam with live you got the main thing going.
The non-linear approach to sequencing (session mode) together with its cool real-time audio warping abilities make Live a very unique application.
It is a complex DAW, though, and requires to RTFM ( ) to fully grasp it.
On the midi side I´d say it is still a bit immature, and there are issues when you want to record Jamstix´midi out for further editing in Live (see the respective thread http://rayzoon.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=37 ).
But recording loops of Jamstix audio and manipulate them with all the warping tools is pure fun.
If you have special questions, don´t hesitate to ask. But again I recommend to read the manual which comes with Live Demo to grasp the whole concept.
I can also mail you 2 Live sets preconfigured for Jamstix that I made. One hosts Jamstix with 2 outputs, one host Jamstix for 7 (stereo-) outputs. |

I don't want to hijack El Taube's thread, but I'm also wrestling with Jamstix in Live 5, and I hope the answers to my questions may help both of us.
I can jam with no problems, but I have two specific questions:
1. Can I record a clip, then get Jamstix to jam with the clip?
2. How do I record Jamstix's output in Live?
And yes, I haven't RTFM fully, but I'm working on it!
Thanks in advance

Of course, yes. When your clip follows the tempo, Jamstix can come in anytime

-Create a Midi Track.
-Insert Jamstix as VSTI for that Midi Track.
-For the Midi Track select Midi from ALL INS, ALL CHANNELS, Audio to MASTER, Monitor AUTO.
-Create an Audio Track.
-For the Audio Track select Audio from JAMSTIX, Track Out, Audio to MASTER, Monitor IN.
Arm the audio track and start recording. |

Thanks Doc. I hope I'm not being stupid (although I probably am) but I can't seem to get the Jamstix track to 'see' the audio track with the clip.
(Again, El Taube, apologies for taking over your thread)

Hi Doc,
Thank you for your reply. I'd love to try your live sets
You are surely right, I have to study the program deeply because until now I have only tried to understand the basics.
Thank you again.
PS: RonF, don't worry about hijacking: your questions were insteresting for me too.

@RonF: Have you inserted AudioM8 in the audio track that you want Jamstix to jam with (i.e. follow velocity) ?
@ El Taube: I´ll send my Live Sets to Ralph. He will surely host them for download. But you can drop me an email and I´ll send them to you directly, too. |

I think I did, but I'll try again this evening, just in case.
Thanks,
