just got jamstix, excited by it but a bit confused. many simpler virtual drummer programs I've played with have a general slider for 'fill amount' just like jamstix has a slider for 'accent amount,' but I can't find anything like that in jamstix.

my music is prog rock, so it's not vcvcbvc. it's tons of unpredictable transitions, one over the other, and so I need lots of fills for lots of strange transitions. in fact, I'd be happy if it was mostly fills, and only occasional groove. do I need to go to the song wizard and program it differently somehow? is there any way to just up the amount of fills, and from there I could back them off? as it is, I can't figure out how to get a drummer to do a basic tom roll fill (even when I use phil as drummer!), it's all groove and accents. can't I just add tom rolls somehow?

Hi there,

You can create a fill in any bar by highlighting that bar, clicking the trashcan icon to clear the bar, open the "Fill" window and then click the "Compose" button. Adjust the Brain Controls in the "Fill" window until you get something you like. To delete a fill and convert it back into a "Groove" bar, do the same but open the "Groove" window before composing. This program will do anything you want it to do, you've just got to be willing to put the time into tackling the learning curve that comes with such a capable tool. Watch the videos and scour the forums. Not trying to discourage you, just trying to point out that some effort is required. Welcome to the club.

Also, too add to that, pay attention go the TF and RF knobs to help set the duration of the fill depending on if you are programming a transition fill or a repetition fill.

Hi Alexis,

I just let JS do its thing and create a new fill. Usually I find I can dial in what I'm looking for fairly quickly. You can right click the Timeline, Load Bar, C:\Jamstix3\data\fills and choose something. Or you can sit around one day when you have some time to kill and let Jamstix generate a lot of fills and "save fill" in the Fill window so you have them available for future use. Maybe it's just from experience, but like I said, I find it easiest ( and more convincing) to just let Jamstix create the parts I need.

Alexis: there is no list of fills. Jamstix calculates the drum hits based on the exposed parameters each time you click on "compose". Though there are fills that appear similar, which are like the selected drumers or styles signature fills, the nuances of the performance is a little different each time.

If you hear something you like, use the "Save Restore Point" option in the Songsheet dropdown. Then if things don't work out, "Load Restore Point".
