| Hi Ralph, I just stumbled upon Toontrack's new EZdrummer. Do you know yet if this will work with Jamstix? Just Curious. Thanks, Tim |

It's a VSTi, so I reckon it probably will.

It certainly will, EzDrummer uses an extended GM map (same as Superior 1.5), meaning it will work right out of the box for the standard instruments.
You might need to remap some special instruments or articulations, but that's child's play in JS. Remember to save that mapping once, you're done.
Only a matter of minutes.
That's for triggering externally, don't know for sure about loading it into JS itself.
Hope that helps,

| That's what I wanted to hear! I really was hooked when they showed the adding of the room mics and overheads in the ezdrummer mixer. I think this will sound terrific with Jamstix. Tim |

So is EZDrummer worth the money?
I like Jamstix, but even with all of the add-on packs, I find myself wishing I had more choices for the sounds.
Much of that probably comes from not knowing how to mix/EQ drums I guess. For example, I can't get a kick sound that I'm happy for modern rock (ala Crossfade, Seether, etc...)
And the fact that I am an add-on junkie. |

Knowing Toontrack I'm pretty sure it will be a good product, though somehow I doubt it will sound better than JS, just different.
I preordered it nevertheless because somebody offered me an incredible deal on it.
The rhythm part of EzDrummer is only a collection of midifiles a la BFD afaik, so not even remotely comparable to JS.
All in all JS with the expansions certainly is the better deal and remains unique in what it does.
If the sonic variety is worth the price is up to you to decide.
Cheers, Rhino

Funny, why can I relate to that ? |

Guys,
As far as I can find, EZ Drummer comes standard with slots for only 3 toms and drum kit sounds only, no percussion, right? That would be a bit limiting. I'd have to add an expansion pack right away - and then end up paying out about as much as the full DFH Superior! After I've done all I can possibly do with Jamstix in, oh, say, 100 years... then I'll get DFHS!
Jamstix Rocks!
Edit 5/18/06: I found a deal on DFHS that I couldn't resist, here: www.scitscat.com. I placed the order and, since I live in Florida, had it in under 24 hours! But I had to pay sales tax - you may end up paying less than me!

You'll have to assign the keys in the mapping tab to route the toms as desired. For example:
JS Tom 1 -> EZD Tom 1 Key
JS Tom 2 -> EZD Tom 1 Key
JS Tom 3 -> EZD Tom 2 Key
JS Tom 4 -> EZD Tom 3 Key
JS Tom 5 -> EZD Tom 3 Key _________________ Ralph Zeuner

|
|
First I am blown away with the quality of all the samples from kick, snare, to cymbals etc, just the way the come in Jamstyx and Jamstyx has some excellent ways of tweaking each drum sound within itself, but in my experience one excellent way to work with mixing the drums from jamstyx is what I have always done with not only midi drums but any midi instruments I have recorded, drums just take a little longer because you have to split them into seperate tracks. I do not know if this works with all sequencing software because I use Cubase SX and only know about it, but I would presume they all work basically the same where you could do this in whatever software you use. Once you have your Jamstyx drum part for your song just the way you want it, drum kits or seperate sounds chosen to be closest to what you are looking for, intro, rhythms, fills, sidestick, etc, then record the output of Jamstyx to a midi track. Once you have it to a midi track use whatever function your software uses to split it to where each note (each note is a different inst, kick, snare, etc.) is on a seperate midi track. Solo the first midi drum track which is usually the kick. Assign its output to Jamstyx and solo any of the four outputs you are using from Jamstyx, and then use what ever function your seq. uses (in Cubase it is export to audio) where it creates an audio track of just the kick. Name this audio track kick, and then solo next midi drum track (which is normally snare) and repeat steps. Do this for each midi track and you will end up with each part (kick, snare, toms, hi hat, etc.) recorded to seperate audio tracks of their own, just like you would if you mic'd a live drum kit with a seperate mic on each drum, hihat and overheads. Now you can use any of your plugins to add FX, eq. pan, volume, mute parts, etc,-anything you want to each audio drum part individually. This takes about 25 minutes for a four minute song. This way you can get just about most any sound you are looking to get out of what Jamstyx produces and have way more control of how the overall drum kit sounds in the end. Hope this helps some of you who are interested in spending just a little more time to make your songs better. I am not great at explaining things in writing so I hope I have made some since in describing this technique.
May God Bless Your Day,
Russell |

Russell, there's a much easier way to do this: simply set Jamstix to allow for 8 outputs and then map each kit piece "hit" to an appropriate output (Kick, Snare, HH etc.). I usually also select the option to have the ambience sent to channel 4 so avoid mapping any pieces to that channel. This way you get each kit piece on its own mixer channel and can apply eq, comp etc. as you like. The beauty is that you haven't committed the arrangement to midi and can contiunue to tweak the arrangement / performance in Jamstix. Oh, and note that there is an option on the mapping page to have all "hits" of one group (e.g. snare) changed to the same channel so you don't have to go through them all one by one - just one for each kit piece.
You can short cut all of this by using the mappings created by Doc which are available on the download page.
Good luck |

| So, as I have Jamstix already, is it worth me buying ezdrummer just for better sounds? Are the ezdrummer sounds noticably better. or just 'different'? |
