1. On a pattern with 1/16th hats, shouldn't a tom hit take priority over the hats? I''ve got a tom hit on 4+ that won't play - but when I mute the hats it will play - which indicates to me to be a limb priority issue. A drummer could choose to stop playing the hats to play a tom - am I missing somehting?
2. On a similar note, I also have a tom accent that is correctly taking priority over the hats. However, it seems to me that the 1/16ths are still sounding. Are you aware of that?
3. Hovering over almost any box displays the velocity. This is very convenient so you can be informed when you make a change, and you can know what to go back to if you change your mind. This feature is not present, however for the main hats boxes (Quarters and +). We have to not only cick with the right button, but actually move it to see the velocity. By that time the velocity has changed so I cannot tell what it was at before. Might this be a logical thing to change in a future update?

We'll check that out...

Please send us a FXB (Save bank) of this situation to support[at]rayzoon.com so we can check this out.

We'll fix that in the next beta.

I looked at the FXB. What is happening here (as well as with the tom panel) is not a matter of available limbs because in both cases one hand is free for the hihat and one is free for the toms. The issue is limb transition time.
Jamstix plays sixteenth hats always with the left hand. The tom panel toms (and most accent toms) are dual handed, meaning Jamstix can use whatever hand is free at that time.
When you check the 4+ tom with 16th hats active, the right hand is busy playing the 8th hat note and the left hand is just coming off the 16th before that. What happens now is that Jamstix picks the free limb (left hand) and then realizes later that there isn't enough time to get the left hand over to the tom and therefore drops the tom note even though it has a higher priority than the hat note on the right hand.
We'll have this fixed in the next beta so Jamstix will be smart enough to calculate whether the free limb can reach the drum in time and, if not, whether the priority of the other hand is lower so it can be bumped instead of the current note.
Thanks for the catch!!! _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yeah - what he said!

I find these little pearls of wisdom really helpful to understand how Jamstix is approaching things, which in turn helps me get more out Jamstix. For example, I'd got the principle of limb priority but hadn't realised that transition time was also considered. How about a 'Secrets of the Jam' sidebar in the manual next time it's updated (unless it gives away too much intellectual capital...)

Ralph,
When you responded to the group of questions that included this one, I think you missed the point of this one. To hear what I mean, select the 1/8th box in the high hat window, turn up the velocity, then select silent for the high hat quarters. You will find that the 1/8th's are still playing. Generally, this is not an issue - you would just deselect the 1/8ths.
The issue is when the hats stop playing because other events take priority (ie. a tom hit / accent / roll). The hats stop playing because a drummer cannot play both. With Jamstix, the 1/4s stop. However, the 1/8ths and 1/16ths keep playing (which also would be impossible).
Wasn't sure if you were aware.

It is not impossible. The hats on the 8th and 16th are playing because a fast drummer could get his hands back and forth. It is just that most human drummers would not do it.
We are thinking about increasing the limb transition time for hihats and ride during fills and accents. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Just released X9-7 beta should fix this to some extent as it now has increased transitioning times to the hihat during fills. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
