I don't think the action was illegal, just a guess. Sometimes in programs things get ignored without warning... in my experience.

Spent rest of the day with Cubase, C&V and jamstix ... just playing. Isn't that what you encourage? Just play with it.

Forgot to mention I did just that. Then when I looked again, Sonar had unchecked it (without telling) as if it found the action illegal.

I was getting that too.

I had to run the Sonar VST Configuration Wizard again, making sure that "Re-scan existing plugins" is checked. After I did that, I could see Jamstix as one of the selections for input of a MIDI track.

Well, I did a rescan too without success. Maybe I should try again, but as always during the last year I end up using Cubase instead. I like working with Sonar better, but somehow there is always trouble and Cubase just works despite the clumpsy interface.

I had the same problem, I thought the VST scan during the 5.2 patch upgrade would have done the trick. However after reruning the VST configuration wizard from the tools menu this has fixed it. Apparently this is different from the basic scan that runs during the patch install.

Hi everyone. I just purchased Jamstix and I am trying to add drum tracks to some pre-recorded guitar tracks in Sonar. The way I think I am supposed to do this is to add Jamstix to the synth rack, create a track with Jamstix as input, and then go Edit -> Bounce to track. I get an error message saying that I do not have enough memory. I am doing this with a Dell Inspiron 9300 with 512 MB of memory which should be enough. Am I doing this wrong or is there another way to record the Jamstix output to an audio track? Please help!

512MB is the absolute minimum. I would highly recommend upgrading to 1GB.

With the song loaded and ready for bouncing, open the Windows task manager, go to the 'Performance' tab and tell me what is says for 'Available' in the physical memory panel.

Also, try freezing Jamstix instead of bouncing.

Thanks for the response. I was able to get it to work. For others who may have limited memory.... I went Start Menu -> Run -> type msconfig -> click on the startup tab -> diable all checked items except for your sound card driver and maybe one or two other things. THen restart your computer and you'll have a little more available memory at start-up. That's what worked for me, but I think it's time to upgrade memory anyway.

Having a problem with Sonar that I hope someone can help with. I'm one of the guys waiting for PG Music to fix Power Tracks so it will work with JS. While I'm waiting I figured I would try out JS with Sonar LE. It works fine using a midi file and having JS jam with that. My problem is with an audio track. I have lots of live multitrack recordings I've made over the years so I thought I would find a good guitar track and insert it into Sonar. I can't get it to play. I opened a new project, went to file>open>insert>audio and it shows up in the track but I hit the play button and nothing happens. The counters don't move. I've tried going into the edit loop window, expanding the track and everything seems to be there but it won't start. The clip was created in Cool Edit and it plays there as well as in Power Tracks. I'm not talking about no sound, it just won't start play. I'm using the EMU 1820M and I have asio enabled with the EMU wave outs. I figure I should get the clip to at least play before I start inserting the Audio8 and stuff. Any ideas?

Bob

We have had some reports of some projects from older versions of Sonar using Jamstix not opening right in Sonar 6, most likely due to the change from the VST wrapper to the internal VST hosting of S6. The best work-around so far is this:

- Open the project in the older Sonar version
- Use 'Save Bank' in Sonar to store the Jamstix configuration to a FXB file
- Note if any MIDI tracks have output=Jamstix and note their numbers
- Remove Jamstix from the synth rack
- Save to a new project file
- Open the new project file in Sonar 6
- Add Jamstix to the synth rack
- Use 'Load Bank' to load the FXB into Jamstix so Jamstix returns to the exact state as it was in the old project
- If you noted MIDI tracks with output=Jamstix in the old project, point those tracks back to the new Jamstix instance
- Save project to a new file

If you are using Sonar 5 with the latest Cakewalk VST adapter and the new MIDI output feature doesn't seem to work with Jamstix, please use the Cakewalk VST configuration wizard to re-scan the plugins and it will work.

Hi there... new to Jamstix but not to Sonar or computer music in general. I am interested in checking out Jamstix particularly with the excellent end-of-year sale going on. I downloaded the demo and ran the installer, but Sonar simply will not recognize that it is there. I have made sure it is in the right plugins directory. I have opened the configuration menu and specifically told it to scan, and to rescan everything just in case. No luck. I did manage to get Sonar 5 to recognize it so I know it works and I can get the idea, but I would be loathe to spend the cash on it if I can't use it in the current version of my host, which also cost me a pretty penny.

Sonar 6 scans VST plugins natively, so there is no wrapper per se anymore but after searching around a bit on this forum and just to be sure I downloaded the demo of DirectiXer as well, and installed that. It gave me a 'cannot load VST plugin file jamstix demo.dll' error message. No go. So that's not really a solution either. What's up? This is a standard full install of Sonar 6 PE. I have tried uninstalling, registry cleaning and reinstalling. Any suggestions?

Very odd. I suggest you check your DEP settings as outlined here. Let me know if that doesn't help:

... yup, that did it! In fact, as a by-product, it solved at least one other significant problem, involving Reaktor, which I had basically completely given up on. So in fact it was extremely auspicious that I didn't give up on Jamstix as well - thank you for pointing out this simple but, evidently, quite important system tweak which despite years of running audio software and attempting to optimize my computers to do so, I have NEVER HEARD ANY MENTION OF until now.

Cheers - I'll be checking into Jamstix more tomorrow and you might have just made a sale! Very Happy

Hi All and especially hi Ralph! I've read through this entire thread and I am amazed at your great responses to all the questions.

Here we go (I feel quite dumb, writing this)...

I am very much interested in purchasing JamStix 2. To make sure it works, I've downloaded the demo yesterday. I am using Sonar 7.02 as my DAW.

I am having trouble Sonar 7 recognizing JS as a VST plugin. When trying to insert a Soft Synth and I get the list of available VST's, JamStix is not an option. I scanned for new VST's after installing JS, restarted Sonar and did that again. Sonar just does not "see" JS.

I have downloaded the MiniHost and the demo of JS works just fine wihtin that handy little utility (thanks for posting that useful tool, btw!).

Not sure what step I am missing. Are there instructions for "DUMMIES" to get Sonar to recognize a new VST, specifically, JamStix?

Mind you, I am not very experienced when it comes to MIDI. My projects are mostly audio, rather than MIDI. What I like about JS is the fact that it will jam along with your live recording of an audio track. That would be my main use of it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am in the market to buy the XL version. Don't want to spend the money until I know how to make it work in Sonar 7, obviously. Laughing

So, please, Ralph ... if you have a step-by-step dummy instruction set on how to make this work, I'd be forever greatful and after I get home and tried it (at work right now), getting it to work, I'll be utilizing my credit card!

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Mike

Hi Mike,
Please open the Sonar plugin manager again and make sure that the path to Jamstix2demo is in the search paths listed. Now issue a 'Rescan' and Sonar should find Jamstix 2.

After that, add Jamstix 2 to the instrument rack via Insert Softsynth. (make sure to tick the box that adds all available audio outputs). Load a quickstart song in Jamstix and then make Sonar play or record and Jamstix will follow it.
