Hi all!
I'm a new JamStix user, and I'd like to get some usage tips from the experts here.
I'm working with Cubase SX, with a pre-programmed drum track and song arrangement, made up of simple patterns.
What I'd like to do is use JamStix to:
1) humanize the drum parts
2) add small variations to the basic patterns (eg, altered hi-hat patterns, etc)
3) add fills
1) is easy enough, but I'm not sure of the best way to work for 2) and 3)
Should I teach JS my drum patterns?
What jam mode should I use - how can I get JS to add small variations to my basic patterns?
How can I audition different fills?
Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to Jamstix and the board!

Yes, import them as MID files via rhythm tab->Import. You may have to make small adjustments afterwards as this is a MIDI-to-rule conversion.
Now arrange your patterns as needed in the Jamstix arranger and add fills and intro/ending as needed.

Use 'Manual Jam' and use the 'snare accent' and 'tom accent' sliders in the rhythm tab to let JS add variations. You can add HiHat accents by selecting 2x16 or open in the + column of the hihat panel and then setting the probability slider as desired.

hi ECC83
To humanise existing midi drum patterns, is not really what Jamstix is about.
Jamstix can create humanistic patterns from scratch,(which is what it's best at in fact) then you can perhaps take a few bars from the JS created track and add to your original , if you want.
It is really worth reading up on it's features.
I find FreeJam with midi monitoring is easier than audio monitoring.
The is a section in the manual about SX3.
One track with your midi keyboard
Second track with Jamstix, set to Freejam with the track monitor button activated in Cubase.
Have a go, and play around with it.
Jamstix has so many features, it will take time to learn, but thats all part of it
Have fun, and come back here if you need any more help.

Thankyou!
I'm up and running now. I'm working on one of my verses that features a simple AB bass/toms pattern... so I've got JS to learn the patterns from my original midi parts, setup the sequencer, then muted the original midi part so now everything is coming from JS. So far so good.
I have a couple of queries:
1) what is the best way to work on a two bar pattern? In Cubase, for example, I'd simply loop a two bar section, and edit that in the drum editor. In JS, I've only been able to work on a single bar at a time, and hence can't hear that bar in context?
2) I've been playing with the various sliders on the pattern page... how do I integrate all this into the arrangment - for example, say I have four bars, ABAB, but I want to have accents only in bar 3+4, do I need to create separate patterns that have the accent sliders set?
Thankyou! |

Ok, I've RTFM a little , am I right with these answers:
1) use the "lock" icon on the pattern page to lock to one pattern whilst the sequencer loops over the two bars
2) get one bar to sound right, then lock that bar in the arranger to prevent further changes, then move onto another bar... rinse, repeat |

Yes, your lock approach for multi-bar patterns is correct. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

You can either use cloned rhythms as you describe or you can leave the sliders at zero and then manually select accents for bars 3 and 4 by clicking the accent name boxes in the rhythm tab for each bar. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Obviously I'm missing something...
I've got the sequencer looping on bars 5 and 6; bar five has pattern A, bar six pattern B. I have "use arrangement" checked. JS plays my two bar pattern.
However, when I go to the rhythm tab, JS loops the same one pattern, irrespective of the status of the rhythm lock button. JS plays different accents on the different bars.
With the lock button open, I would expect the rhythm tab to display the changing patterns along with the sequencer; with the lock button closed, I would expect JS to display one pattern, but continue playing the correct patterns as laid out in the arrangement (given that "use arrangement" is checked)

If you lock the rhythm then only the current pattern will be played, regardless of 'Use Arrangement' and the loop in your sequencer. This feature is for single-pattern editing.
I duplicated this here with SX 2.2, looped from bars 5 to 7, rhythm lock off and the rhythm tab switches between the rhythms assigned to bars 5 and 6 as one would expect.
Please double-check and tell me your SX version and JS versions. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi,
I'm using SX 3.1.1 and JS 1.5
I checked again, when on the rhythm tab, the *pattern* never changes. The *accents* do, and "lock" locks the sequencer to a given bar, enabling me to edit the accents for that bar. Is this right?
I think I get it a bit better now... I need to make my changes in the rhythm tab, but switch back to the arrangement tab to hear them in context? Thats a bit awkward if so...
Thanks for your patience! |

Okay, let's focus on that. Please have 'Use Arrangement' on and don't lock the rhythm tab at all. Loop Cubase and watch the name box in the rhythm tab. The pattern must change as instructed in the arrangement. If it doesn't, please send me a screenshot of the rhythm tab at that time to support[at]rayzoon.com _________________ Ralph Zeuner
