|

I'm new to Jamstix and perhaps I'm overlooking something patently obvious. If that's the case, please forgive me. Better still, just forgive me anyhow!
Question: Is there a way to define rythms that are longer than a single measure? I often find myself creating rythm phrases and loops that are two measures long (8 beats or two bars).
I guess I could create two rythms - one containing the first half of the phrase and the other containing the last half, but it would be good to hear the whole phrase as I'm creating it... Also, I guess one would be limited to using the arranger and not jamming if the rythm is broken into two segments.
thanks for any insights |

Hi and welcome to the board!
Yes, Jamstix is limited to single bar patterns as far as free jamming is concerned. However, with MIDI jamming Jamstix aligns rhythm slots with key patterns received so that multi-bar patterns can happen.
In manual mode you can have multi-bar patterns by alternating assignments in the arranger. That is harder to edit as you have to build them one at a time but personally I'm fine with that as I can often concentrate on only one bar at a time anyway. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks for the quick reply, Ralph!
Alternating paterns in the arranger is the way to go for me, then. No biggie.
Interesting note you made about MIDI jamming being able to result in multi-bar paterns. I shall retain that nugget of wisdom and try out some future experiments in 'coaxing' certain multi-bar Jam pattern tendancies using a pre-prepared midi track as the jam source, rather than an audio source.
cheers! |

It all centers around what we call the 'marker', which is essentially all MIDI 'keys' pressed right at the beginning of a bar, grouped by semitone (octaves or order do not matter). So if you have 5 or more keys/notes triggered at the beginning of a bar, this will lead to a very good marker for Jamstix and it is very likely to play the same rhythm slot everytime that marker re-appears. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

very enlightening. When you say 'notes triggered at the beginning of the bar', does that also include notes that are being carried across the beginning of the bar (still held) or do these notes have to be played precisely at the start of a bar?
thankies |

The notes have to be triggered at the beginning of the bar, not held over. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph, this is a fascinating insight into how Janstix "thinks". Does this mean that notes not quantized correctly could be ignored (i.e. if they start just before the bar)? This could have a significant impact on chord recognition? _________________ Core 2 E6600, 2GB RAM, 2x320 SATA II HD

Notes for the marker are collected from 3 ticks before to 3 ticks after the bar start to allow for imprecise note starts. This range equals an eighth of a note. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hello
At the time, I'm in the same situation as SpaceCustard and use 2 rythms in the arranger for my 8/8, and now I'm in lack of free rythmes (our music is not only beautiful, but also very various and long ... ) so I launch several Jamstix in Cubase, but I'm afraid of CPU ressources in the next days, when the project will be near the end. Then, is it possible to have more than 16 rythms, or a way of not launching more than one Jamstix ? _________________ Little Seb |

Freeze JS to get an audio clip of the first section of the song. Now add a second JS for the second section. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
