Downloaded the demo and FreePak today and was well inpressed! Tried running it in Emagic Logic Platinum 5 and it worked well for a while. Then a problem occurred; when switching between tabs a couple times the program freezes and an error message pops up: "Canvas does not allow drawing". Tried running the demo in another VST host (fxpansion SVH) and the same problem occurred. Thought might be a video problem and updated driver. Wich didn´t work either.
Any ideas?

As a first step in solving this, please try running the Jamstix demo in SAVIHost or MiniHost. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

After a lot of reading-up on the web about "Canvas does not allow drawing" and "Parameter is incorrect" errors I found that these errors are usually caused by windows running low on system resources in the GDI area. The memory area reserved for the GDI is set at 64K and connot be changed in Windows 9x. Stepping up to Win XP should overcome this problem, but I'd rather not because for some of my hardware XP drivers are not available.
I tried running the jamstix demo in Logic after I killed all un-nessecary processes (virus scanner, firewall etc.) to free up as many resources as possible. However, this didn't solve the problem.
A possible cause could be a resource leak (i.e. resources are not relased properly) in the acual coding of the program. Do you think this could be the case?
Thanks |

The 64k GDI heap could be the culprit. Jamstix has not been coded with that limitation in mind as it has been removed in Win2k and XP and Rayzoon does not officially support 98SE or Me. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Sorry if this does not help you to solve your problem directly but I couldn't resist to comment your post.
Honestly (no offense intended), why are you using a high class audio interface like the Audiophile under such an old OS? I would really recommend to switch over to Windows XP since this is the one and only Windows based OS which is quite stable and does have enough power to support professional audio and MIDI, IHMO. I know that your PC is probably too weak for XP but if you consider to use Jamstix and other premium VSTi's in serious projects you need a faster PC anyway. Windows 98 causes nothing than problems with MIDI and audio. Also, if you read the specs for Jamstix you'll see that Win 98 is not officially supported. _________________ "Music is higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy." (Ludwig van Beethoven) |

Sorry - but I have to take issue with this statement, because it simply isn't true.
I ran 98SE, until very recently, for the simple reason it was the most stable platform for my main audio program (Cool Edit Pro)and my main midi sequencer (CWPro9). Under 98SE, I never had one crash, despite the machine being on 24/7. I could go away for days - leaving stuff open - and come back to exactly where I was before I left (note, I said I could, not that I did - even I'm not that stupid). In short, I had no problems with either audio or midi under 98SE. Hardware changes forced XP onto me - and the system, although pretty good, has never been quite as rock solid and I get the odd (and unaccountable) crash every so often.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with 98SE (or even 98FE) for such applications. The secret lies in having the whole system optimised for the work you intend to do. It took me, probably, a year to get 98 to this pinnacle of perfection and obviously I have yet to reach this with XP .
If jmidde has a working system, I can understand his reluctance to 'upgrade' to another OS without very good reason. Added to that, upgrading is not just installing a later OS, there will be additional hardware and driver considerations as well. All in all, changing the OS is not a simple procedure and if it ain't broke, why fix it until it is? |

I Couldn't agree more, Fingers. I´ve been using 98 for years now, on different machines. I also used to have problems, but they were hardware related. (Via chipset PCI latency trouble.) After installing the right patches this machine has been working fine for a long time now. It is doing what it is supposed to do and I don't like to be forced into buying new software or hardware! Like when Apple bought Emagic they offered me to "upgrade" to a Mac. No thanks. I know Jamstix doesn't support win 98 but I thought it might be a glitch in the program. No offence |
