The only way im working with Jamstix is live recording midi (via BFD), and then editing the recoirded midi file to arrange my song.

I would use the arranger though, if i could figure out how to properly use it.!!....maybe someone could do a DETAILED tutoriol, or maybe we could start sharing arrangements; for example, i would love a commercial pop arrangement, or commercial rock etc: maybe future releases of Jamstix could included structure/arrangement templates.

Please can someone help meeee!! Smile

(ps.i have read the manual + watched the tutorials)

The basic concept is as follows:

Select the rhythms you need from the library or edit your own. You can use up to 16 rhythms per arrangement.

Go to the arranger and mute bars 1 and 2 (click 'mute' then click bars 1 and 2 so they turn black and then click 'select' again). This is to give Jamstix two bars to synch up. This may not be necessary in your specific host but I thought I should mention it.

For the next bars click on the intersection of the rhythm you want them to use and the vertical column of the bar. This could be an intro section or the first verse. You may then want to right-click on bar 3, click 'Intro' and select a fitting intro (use the note icon in the dialog to preview). Now repeat the rhythm selection for each following section of the song.

Finally, you should go to the bars before a rhythm change and select a fill via right-click where desired and also add an ending on the last bar.

Hope this helps.

Personally, I use Jamstix with BFD, DFHS and C&V. Each one has its specific purposes. However, since we came out with the DrumPaks, I find myself using other modules less and less. Especially with the upcoming SnarePak (which I get to use already Smile) you can quickly adapt a Jamstix kit to a specific mood or genre.

I find that I follow these very basic rules:

Classic Rock= DrumPak #1 kit and add fitting snare (SnarePak Rockstar is the best for classic rock)

Modern Rock, Funk etc.=DrumPak #2 + fitting snare

For each kit I switch hihats and rides as follows:

Classic sounds/heavier stuff=DP2 HiHats+DP1 ride
Modern Rock=DP1 Hats+DP2 Ride
Modern Rock/Heavier=DP2 hats+ride
Tight stuff (funk or sophisticated hat work)=DP2 rod hats+DP2 rod ride

Building custom kits in Jamstix is not difficult and allows you to fit your specific needs.

Hope this helps!

It's something we've been tossing around but one of the main advantages of JS is the limb control, velocity variance etc. None of this really applies to dance/trance/e-music. So, while it can be done in JS it isn't something high on the priorities.

That is a subjective thing. On paper, BFD is superior since it has more mics and more velocity layers. In an actual mix, JS+DrumPaks can sound as good as BFD (IMHO). In some areas (toms especially) I almost always prefer the DrumPaks over BFD, but again, this is subjective.

For specific songs, the DrumPaks can fit better than the BFD sounds. Personally, I try DFHS, BFD and Jamstix/DP on any given song and then stick with what works best.

very true... your completely right. Smile

I might buy the drumpacks in a few weeks. BFD sounds great but is not reliable since its always having code problems; plus it takes a huge amount of ram to run.

When you load a rhytm into the arranger:

-- how do you later add more rhytms without overwriting the ones youve already got in the arranger.....

-- when im happy with the performance, i LOCK the bars which im happy with....but this doesnt seem to properly save the exact same peformance as before.

thanks for your help ralph.....you r a very kind programmer Smile

Right-click on an empty rhythm name in the arranger and the load dialog will come up.

It should stay the same. We'll look into it...

Hia,

Is it possible for jamstix to midi learn an entire midi performance structure??
ie. Im trying to do a cover of a song using a midi file---Bfd on the drums.........can you assign the output of bfd midi into Jamstix, so that jamstix can learn the whole drum rhytms and structure to later 'jam' with?

Cool Cool Idea Very Happy

No. At this point you can only 'teach' Jamstix rhythms via the 'Learn' function in the rhythm tab. You still have to arrange them yourself.
