Hi all
New to this whole DAW world as well as Jamstix (been out of the loop since my Tascam Porta1 and Boss Dr Rythm were highly desirable items for the home-recordist!), so be gentle with me...
First off - fantastic product! The inspiration to get me back into recording now I know you can make human music on computers. So onto my question.
Jamstix is up and running (in Cubase SL). I'm 'Jamming with Audio' quite successfully once I'm into the groove, but I'm struggling a bit with intro's - understandably it takes Jamstix a few bars to lock-on, but that leaves me with a very 'downbeat' first 2 bars.
I've tried inserting 2 bars of loud 'dummy' audio on another track with a second AudioM8 inserted, and muting it in the main mix, but that seems a bit clunky (and I thought it might be affecting Jamstix responsiveness to the main audio track?).
Is this sensible, or is there a better way to 'force' some level into it / out of it, to give me an energetic intro?
cheers, Chris |

That would work fine. No problems with JS on that.

This is an interesting issue.
Most people end up converting free jam sessions to manual sessions for fine-tuning later and use a 'Velocity' automation envelope which makes this adjustment easy.
We'll look into adding some more options to the next beta, such as VST automation for 'Min Velocity' so you can draw an envelope in your Jamstix MIDI track in the host that raises Min Velocity to max for the time of the intro.
Another good thing would be a feature that holds the same velocity during intros and endings. Do you trigger the jam start with a burst of audio and then keep the instrument silent while Jamstix plays the intro? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Fantastic product AND the support is as good as the reputation!

Learnt something already here (still a bit of a MIDI novice too!). Was trying to compensate in Manual Jam using 'volume' automation, so will go look for 'velocity' instead.

Sounds groovy

Exactly so - just copied a loud a bit at random into 2 dummy bars before the piece actually begins.
At least I know I haven't just missed something really obvious - will continue to play...

So your burst triggers the start of the jam but as the burst subsides the velocity slider moves back down and the intro is too quiet. Is that correct?
If so, I wonder if we should just 'freeze' the velocity received with the burst for the duration of the intro? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Right again.
But now I see it all down in black and grey, as the 'burst' track is muted in the main mix, I can run it it into the piece, which is a perfectly good solution (although no complaints if you'd like make it even easier at some point!)
I mostly just wanted to check there isn't a standard / better way to deal with it ('cos you never know what you don't know) and that there were no issues with multiple AudioM8s
Thanks again!
