I am particularly interested in reggae styles.
Can somebody please tell me if reggae is available in Jamstix.

There are 2 reggae rhythms in the Jamstix library. Try the Jamstix demo, go to the rhythm tab, click LOAD and use the key word 'reggae' to check them out.
Unlike Groove Agent, Jamstix can be used to edit rhythms or create them from scratch so you can roll your own or import MIDI clips of reggae patterns into Jamstix and store them in the library. Thus, Jamstix is not limited to 2 reggae rhythms.
The free jam rhythm generator of Jamstix is geared toward rock/funk/pop/blues and cannot likely be forced to play distinct reggae without jumping through a few hoops.

Which begs the question, is there likely to be any extension to other styles at some future date? Personally, I'd like to see some 'swing' and 'latin' type patterns, but I'm sure there are plenty of others which user would want. |

Jamstix currently has 21 rhythms with the key word 'latin' as well as the 'Latinize' character setting and 'Latin' snare style. This should allow for a wide variety of latin applications already.
The BrushPak adds 13 rhythms with the 'swing' key word and a 'Swing character' so, again, this should be a good start for now.

I should preface my reply by stating I am running x8-5 - I can't keep up with all the betas  . It's quite possible that some of my concerns have already been addressed in the newer versions.
I've been playing around a bit and I'm getting better results with 'swing' material than I was before. I still find it a bit 'wooden' and it's difficult to make Jamstix hold a groove for any length of time, as it seems to want to change patterns very frequently.
However, I really am failing to make any sense out of the 'latin' stuff. To take a very basic example, say I want a bossa-nova rhythm. I have found it impossible to produce the basic 2 bar clavé pattern - which is fundamental to that rhythm. Similarly, for a samba, the fundamental 2 bar pattern (which is almost the same as the bossa-nova, with just one beat shifted) cannot be achieved.
Maybe it's me just not understanding Jamstix properly, but I find I am having a lot more success by creating a basic midi drum track manually and then feeding that into Jamstix to let it add some embellishments.
I'm trying not criticise Jamstix - I think it's an amazing bit of software. It's obviously has a lot of potential and you, equally obviously, are spending a lot of time developing that potential. If it never got any better than it now is, it would still be great value for money. |

This is not exactly the rhythm you sent me but it illustrates the concept.

This is a two bar bossa; the key is to alternate the rhythms in the arranger.

OK, I placed the bossanova.fxb file in the 'arrangements' directory (where it seems all the other .fxb files live) and re-booted Jamstix.
I can't find any reference to 'bossanova' in the Jamstix interface, so I guess I've done somethng wrong.
NB: I was going to update to x-12, but I see x-13 has just appeared, so I'm still running x-5. |

FXB files are standard VST spec. You load and save them via your host. It's usually called 'Load Bank' or something similar. If you can't find it, tell me your host and I'll help.

Ralph, don't you ever sleep?
OK - using Tracktion as the host, I boot up Jamstix (now at x-12) and select keyword jam. This tells me I have 7 rhythms available. In Tracktion, I can open the Progam menu and I can see 16 slots, the first seven of which are filled with patterns I know were already there. I thought I'd find the new one located in slot 8.
Then I realised there was a 'load preset' option in Tracktion. Hitting that, I got the option to load fxb/fxp files. I loaded the file you sent me and Jamstix switched immediately to Manual Jam/Play input. I ran Tracktion, but all I get is what I would call a basic 'rock' pattern - so I guess I've got absolutely no idea what I am doing  . |

Your steps are all correct. You should see rhythms 0 and 1 alternate in the arranger. When you play Tracktion, it should sound like this:

I was right - you don't sleep
OK - I think I have it figured out now. With your guide pattern, I now realise that what I was doing was playing around with controls which I shouldn't have been touching (such as the 'character') this just screwed things up. If I leave things alone, it does exactly what it says on the tin  .
I think I need to make some time and sit down with Jamstix and really get inside it. I always knew there was a lot more there than it seems at first glance. I've owned it for a while now, but not really had the time to get to understand all that's going on.
If I can prevail with one more (quick) question. This pattern alternates between 'rhythm 0' and 'rhythm 1' - is there an easy way to change it to start alternating with 'rhythm 1'?
I really must learn how to do this stuff for myself  .
Great support here - I really don't know how you find the time. |
