|
|
Still on-the-fence about purchasing this and would appreciate some thoughts on a few concerns listed below in order of importance to me.
I am using the demo of Jamstix on Tracktion version 1.6.0.1 on the same computer that I use Pro Tools version 6.1.1 on, therefore am using the ASIO drivers that came with that. Of course, I am NOT using Pro Tools at the same time!
I tried searching for all these but didn't find anything that I needed, so if these problems have been addressed, my apologies...
1. I am hearing clicking or popping noises in the Jamstix audio (not real loud). These noises occur in tempo so I assumed they were caused by a drum sample or maybe caused by Jamstix trying to play a not-included-sample in the demo version. So I went to the Output tab and turned down each sound to zero (even the not-included-sounds) and waited to see if that would eliminate the pops. If it didn't, I would turn the sound back up and go on to the next sound. Well, I never got rid of the clicks, so I assume this isn't related to any sample. For some reason they are the most noticable on these keyword rhythms: "no snare" & "lots of everything"! Any ideas?
2. When I go to the Rhthym tab and "lock" it to program my own, it just toggles between beat 1 and 2! (No, I don't have the sequencer on 2/2...it's either 3/4 or 4/4).
I can probably find a work-around for the following two concerns, but I'm justs curious...
3. In the Jam tab using FreeJam with all the Controls at the very left, I still get too many crash cymbal hits. I would think the Cymbal Hits control would go from zero hits to "x" amount of hits?
4. Fills in 3/4 time are sometimes right on but very often sound terrible...like the virtual drummer really can't play anything but 4/4 fills (which I suspect is the answer).
Thanks for listening! |

Sounds like ASIO buffer overrun. I'd try moving the voice reduction slider in the mapping tab to the middle position. If it still pops then increase your ASIO latency and see if that helps.

Very odd. Let's nail down the steps to duplicate:
- load Tracktion, new project
- add Jamstix
- hit Play in Tracktion
- go to rhythm tab and hit lock icon
Does that produce the behavior for you?

You should only hear cymbals when the rhythm changes and no more than once per 4 bars (IIRC). Going in and out of powerplay will also add crash cymbals. You can control this after the jam by unchecking the 'Change Crash' box in the rhythm tab for the rhythms in use.

You got it. Fills in 3/4 are truncated 4/4 fills so they may or may not work. I recommend manually assigning alternate fills in the arranger where needed.
We are looking at improving the fill behavior in non 4/4 time sigs in Jamstix 2. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yep, thanks!

I was wrong, it works fine in 4/4. Try it in 3/4! It only toggles beat 1 and 2!

Okay, fiddling with the controls seems to have tamed the beast.

I know you said there would be an upgrade cost, but will version 2 by itself cost more that the current version? |

We'll check that out...

Jamstix 2 is not exactly around the corner so precise pricing has not been set. I would expect it to be released in Q4 2006 and, most likely, in a standard and pro version with the former staying at $99. Upgrade costs should be less than 50%. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

but it hesitates a beat when I click the lock icon so it is now one beat off of the sequencer. It does this in 4/4 time also.
|
The lock is actually designed to work without the host running (but in the case of Tracktion it must be running). When you hit the lock, the beat counter resets to 1 at that moment so it may or may not be in line with the host. Once you unlock, it will synch right back up. We'll look into this issue.

The other big problem is I can barely hear any sounds now. I have the settings just like the other dll!
|
Very odd. Did you check the volume sliders in the output tab? Do they show healthy levels?
Sorry about the name, this was a quick DLL compiled just for you. |

Thanks for all your help Ralph, but I'm just going to have to give it up. I really can't spend alot more time. It's very possible that my version of Tracktion isn't going to work.
The latest dll does sync up in lock, but a couple of times it got out of sync when un-locked! (I noticed this on the original dll, too). It only happened a couple of times, so I wouldn't care about that, but isn't the Jam Part supposed to stay fixed on the one that was playing when you click lock? Sometimes it did, more often than not it didn't! Or doesn't that work properly with Free Jam chosen?
I also am only getting these sounds: Low volume snare, one splash or crash or something at about the right volume, and ride cymbal at a kind of low volume. Absolutely no kick, hat, or toms! I've checked mutes, volumes, panning, the output tab.....
Maybe I don't understand the logic behind the lock feature?
The sounds issue has me stumped though...I do notice that the loading of samples whizzes by pretty fast when I load the original dll but it REALLY goes fast on the dll's you've been sending me. Maybe they're not loading all the sounds? |

Sorry for the frustration! If you ever want to pick this back up let me know.
Synch with Tracktion is tight for me here but I'm using V2.

Almost sounds as if your velocity slider in the middle/bottom of Jamstix is down due to low velocity notes in MIDI free jam or zero audio volume in AUDIO jam mode. I know you don't want to waste any more time but check that slider if you want. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Nope. Everythings looks like it's working. Looks exactly like the first dll, but just those sounds I mentioned coming through.
I don't know how you can keep up with all the questions you get here! You sure do take a lot of time for your customers.
Wish it could have worked out.
Thanks, Ralph! |

Found the problem. The current beta has sample load logic accelerations that work for the full sample set but not the limited sample set of the demo. We would have caught that before releasing an official new demo based on this beta but I threw together the new demo for you without testing.
Here's a new Build that fixes the issue and will load demo sounds correctly: http://66.235.201.50/demos/jamstix1766demo.zip _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I've been seeing the same thing with the "default.rdm" and "intdefault.rdm" (both dated 2005-11-21). And the result is that I can barely hear the drums. A closer look at the Mapping page revealed, for example, that the Snare was silent. In my default mappings, this is 'Snare - 14'' Stage Custom Unmuffled'. Looking in the SAMPLES folder revealed the the file does exist (in its many variations all dated 2005-03-20). The files appear to be intact (not empty or corrupted). Nevertheless, they make no sound within JS. This is also true of rides, crashes, etc.
There's a problem even if I load a "good" mapping (e.g. 'DrumPak #1 - Standard.rdm'), then re-load only the snare (''Snare - 14'' Stage Custom Unmuffled'). It loads too fast (the progress dialog flashes and is gone), then there is no sound, either while playing or via the Audit button.
Is it possible that there was a change in files formats (rdm or rzd) in recent versions that may account for this?
And/or what about INI file settings? Might I have some old setting that should no longer be present?
A quick survey revealed these problem sounds:
Clap DP2
Crash 16" HHX
Crash 18" HHX (loads fast, too quiet)
HiHat Closed - 14" HHX (loads fast, too quiet)
HiHat Foot - 14" HHX (loads fast, too quiet)
HiHat Half Open - 14" HHX (loads fast, too quiet)
HiHat Open Stick - 14" HHX (loads fast, too quiet)
Kick - 22" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Ride - 20" HHX
Ride Bell - 20" HHX
Snare - 14'' Stage Custom Unmuffled
Snare Bounce - 14'' Stage Custom
Snare Rimshot - 14'' Stage Custom Unmuffled (NOTE: 2 spaces before '-')
Snare Rimshot - 14'' Stage Custom Unmuffled
Snare Sidestick - 14'' Stage Custom
Tom - 10" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Tom - 14" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Tom - 16" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Tom - 18" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Tom - 8" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Tom Bounce - 10" Stage Custom
Tom Bounce - 14" Stage Custom
Tom Bounce - 16" Stage Custom
Tom Bounce - 18" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
Tom Bounce - 8" Stage Custom (loads fast, too quiet)
The ones not marked "(loads fast, too quiet)" cannot be heard at all.
I understand that some of the early samples might not have been recorded with the longer samples of DP1/2, and so they would load faster. However, as a result of doing the above survey, it feels as though the full velocity layers are not being loaded.
Note: during this survey, I loaded them all into the "China A" slot, with Audit Velocity up full, Sustain and Volume up full, Pitch and Pan in the middle, Output set to 1, Filter and Auto Load off, and the Velocity bar up full. Also, X Samples was on, Low Memory off, Voice Reduction at 8. Map GM Input on.
Hope this helps. _________________ Dealer for AccuGroove, Acoustic Image, BassLab, Eminence, Muse Receptor, MIDIjet, Rayzoon, and more...

Hi Greg, yes it's the same problem. Sounds as if you have the default sounds still in the demo form, not the full set. I'd recommend you run jamstix_data_setup.exe again to get the full default sample set.
Also, here's the Build 1766 fix in full version form. Let me know if it helps.

Yes, build 1766 solved the problem. But I'll re-run jamstix_data_setup.exe, then go back to build 1763 to verify that the demo sounds were replaced.
