my current system is pentuim D dual core 2.8 1 gig(2x512 meg "kit", dual core) 7200rpm SATA drive.... XP media center (I NEVER use any media center functions, I wonder what it is....seriously!)

soooo having only one HD is probably pretty taxing on the poor little guy, but SOON, I will have a new screaming SATA 10k rpm drive, currently I have 3 open slots for SATA drives... I use SONAR 4 and of course totally love JS

like so many others, i am not a drummer and JS is the single most well behaved drummer I have ever met! Wink
I would have been sooo lost if I had to try to figure out how to drum with dr. rythm etc... (I play guitar and a little piano and sing)

it was suggested to me that I should have a drive DEDICATED to the tracks (.wav files) that SONAR writes... this seems like a great idea, and I read that the whole sytem will handle large amounts of tracks (say over 16+ audio) much more easily... all this seems logical... not to mention that a couple more gigs of ddr2/533 in a dual channel "kit" is also coming in the near future...

my question is this:
should I leave the install of SONAR and JS well enough alone on the first drive, and let the new HD handle JUST the large data files........OR should sonar, Jamstix or both be newly installed on the new drive as well???

My instincts tell me to leave the installs where they are, and defrag often(as I already do), and let the new drive be dedicated to the fast writing of the track data...

I just ask because Ralph, may I call you Ralph??? For sure you have the best understanding of what type of resources (hard drive/ram) that Jamstix actually uses most etc...

I have been more productive recording now then EVER before because JS opens so many doors rythm-wise THANK YOU SO MUCH for a GREAT super inventive product!! My little project have been all cover songs for now, but if you ever want to hear yet more examples of your fantastic software/drummer in action, let me know... maybe someone can tell me how to legally post my versions of other peoples songs ie:the great bob dylan and john prine and others.... maybe some legalese that I need to include to protect myself or whatever....

ok, that was overly long winded!

thank you again, I am a little wary of beta's as I get to know JS, but I keep a close eye on your progress, and though I am on a tight budget like many, I can assure you that you have a very loyal customer and free advertising too!

I'd say your instinct is right. Keep the data on a separate drive. In fact, you will reduce the need to de-frag the non-data drive, since you will be writing to it a lot less.

If you're going to have three (or more) drives, then keep the OS on one, applications on the second and data on the third (pick the fastest one for the latter).

thank you!
that makes me feel more excited to get my new drive, I'm hoping in the next couple weeks...

....and I imagine that it will help a bunch when I can afford my new ram as well!

I would agree with that. I'd put the audio recording folder of Sonar on the new drive so all audio clips go there. I'd also put all the data of my VSTi there. Leave the first drive for all Windows-related actions (Windows, Program Files, Sonar program, plugins, swap file etc.). Ideally, if you have a third drive, I'd put just the plugin data on it so all the plugin disk streaming runs off a separate drive from the Sonar audio playback.

You can move the Jamstix data by moving the entire Jamstix folder to the new drive, leaving just the jamstix.dll and audioM8.dll in the plugins folder. Next time Jamstix launches it will prompt you for the new data location and you're all set.

I'm not an expert but you should be fine if you keep the clip to 30 seconds or less. I'd love to hear them!

Your real legal implications begin when you actually sell your cover versions, which you are automatically entitled to due to the 'compulsory license' concept. However, if you'd sell them you'd have to send a letter of intent to the publisher of the original song and pay royalties from your income.

Thank you for your VERY kind word about Jamstix!

okok.....a couple things..... I understand the part about the audio data going to the new drive, but what is VSTi data?? Im purdy ignant Embarassed

do you mean stuff like my Antares (plug in effects) VST stuff?

....and yes I think I get the part about the JS data going on a THIRD drive, which I will make a priority after this one (the new 10k SATA)and some other important goodies...

......... 2G ram, then a new mic, wooohooooo Shocked Razz I have a few good mics, nothing fancy, SM81, Rode NT3(great clear open sound, low noise bang for buck), and an SM58.... the mic I want next is a toss up between the Rode K2(tube) and the Neumann TLM103... the Neumanns are sweet for the money but the K2 won some big prize against a bunch of heavyweights in 04....... anyway, if anyone wants to comment on mics, please chime in..... Very Happy

....also thank you for the info on sharing cover tunes!

and you are VERY welcome for my kind words about your Jamstix, I tell everyone about it as I play them my stuff, and I will send you some samples for kicks when/after I apply a bit more polish to a couple mixes..... I love to play funk-ish stuff, but I also love to play mellow folky/singer/songwriter-ish stuff, and that has been my focus in these few weeks with my "new drummer" and I just want to comment on how well this 'guy' can "drag" a beat (I'm not too sure I got that bit of drum lingo right), but what I mean is how nicely the drums can lay back in a slower tune, veeeery tasty!!! Certainly not the best showcase songs to show ALL that JS can do, but ones that show how sweet and soft JS can behave.... the funk is coming soon!!!!

you deserve all the accolades you get Mr. Z, just please............KEEP UP YOUR GREAT WORK!!!! Very Happy

I mean things like the 35GB of sample data that DFHS comes with. Generally, the data of plugins that disk-stream very large amounts of sample data.

ok, i think i see, so... so far I don't have large vSTi plugins that have major data, just the other types that alter the sound files... so just sonar data for now...when I get my drive..

thanks!
