I was using MIDI input to play Kontakt thru Jamstix, I only programmed a kick and snare so I could experiment with Jamstix doing grace notes and hats. I noticed that the difference in velocity between the downbeats and the lower-velocity offbeats was huge, like down in the 20's, and I could barely hear the grace notes or eighth notes in Kontakt. I tried moving the min/max velocity sliders, but nothing seemed to raise the floor on Jamstix's velocity output; am I missing something there?

Are you saying that the velocity of snare ghost notes and hihat eighths is too low? If so, please go to the mapping tab while the rhyhtm is playing and select the snare in the sound list. The velocity map is the relationship of intended to actual output velocity and is linear by default. If you draw a curve that is higher in the middle (like a logarithmic curve) you instruct Jamstix to output higher velocities in the middle range. This way you can adjust to the specific velocity/volume ranges of various drum modules. Do the same with 'HiHat Closed'. Just draw the curve as the rhythm plays until you like the velocity separation. Save the mapping and the adjustments will be saved.

Yes, in my own, complicated way. Rolling Eyes

OK, sounds good. I missed that that is where one adjusts it. Off I go...

Thanks again!

Well, you can also adjust the ghost notes and HH with the right-click/hold/slide up-down on the boxes in the rhythm tab but if the velocity difference is more due to the sound engine (Kontakt) having a different velocity/volume spread than the Jamstix sounds than it's better to adjust in the mapping tab where it will have a global effect.

I just tried the Velocity thing, worked great. I'm not sure where the right-click/hold/slide up-down are...but the mapping tab worked perfectly. Actually, I can tell this plug-in is designed to work with high-quality libraries as I have to kind of dumb-down the velocities to work with my Kontakt kit, which only has a few velocity layers. I look forward to trying it with BFD or one of my Giga sets!

Anyway, it's working well. My mind is reeling with the possibilities here, and I have a hundred questions for every solution...I'm going to play some more.

When you enable a hit on a specific spot on the Rhythm-tab, you click on a 'black hole' which turns bright green. Hold your mouse above that green spot, right click and slide up and down to raise or lower the volume! The higher the volume, the brighter the spot, the lower the volume, the duller the spot. At the bottom left corner of the Jamstix screen you can see the exact volume.

Hm, I think a picture will make everything clear... Wink

Edit:
Pardon the typo. Wink

Wow, I totally did not know that! I just thought they were on/off, that's it. Nice! Wonderful program, this. Very Happy Thanks for the nice picture (we know drummers need pictures, eh?) Wink
