Ralph
Oh yes.... I just got my Drumpack#2 and Brushpack!
The DP#2 is just as amazing as I hoped it would be.
What a fantastic snare... just what I wanted.
This would be one of my top 3 snare sounds! And I'm not talking about other companies snare samples... I mean of all the real snares I would want in the world this would be in the top three.
It's warm and bright at the same time... it has presence and even though it is close-mic'd it has a really nice room sound to it.
the kick is good to... really warm
The great thing with the snare is that you have got the 'feel' right with how it plays... other samples of snares sound great when you 'audition' each 'hit' but as a set, being played by a 'sampler' or drum machine' they just don't sound real... DP#2 sounds like a REAL drummer.
(and by the way... for the record ...I wasn't into the 'hot-rods' at all... just not my thing I guess)
The brush-pack is OK... doesn't 'blow me away'.. but I wasn't expecting it to, I just thought that I should have it case I want to record a song with brushes and I'd have no brush samples.
I still would probably use the BFD Toms and cymbals for a final mix... not that the DP#2 cymbals and toms aren't 'useable'... but lets face it...BFD hihats, crashes, Kicks and Toms take a lot of beating...
Fortunately Ralph... you have made a snare that plays and sounds better than what BFD can offer...
Which brings me to my 'wish-list' for Jamstix...
How about a 'snare only pack'... a 'Classic Snares pack'...close mic'd like the DP#2 so we can use our own convolution reverbs (like the Waves IR-1) with a selection of classic snares like BFD have done... but do it properly like you have done in DP#2.... you could sample some brass snares... like a Ludwig Black Beauty, some nice old wooden vintage Gretsches, ... premier, Leedy...you know whay I'm saying.. maybe a few really rattly old vintage snares... ones that when you hear the samples you can almost smell the dust on the snare wires... looslt tuned...some snares with real character...
The reason why this would be a real cool idea to me... is that when I heard that DP#2 snare... I thought "oh yeah, this is the sound I'm after.." and then it struck me that I'll be using this snare sound on everything I do from now on... so it'd be nice to have a selection of...say...six or so total classic snares that were recorded up close and as well as this one... so I don't have the DP#2 snare on every single track!
BFD have such a great snare selection.... but if you do it Ralph... they'll sound better than BFD and be more useable.. forget the 36 mics... just do a nice close stereo classic snare collection!!
Anyone else out there be interested in that?
Maybe a list could be collected of really desirable snares?
Anyway much impressed with DP#2!!!

Thanks for your kind words, Paspallum! We are actually thinking about a SnarePak since it is arguably the most important or defining sound of the kit. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

that is so true.... I say that myself so often. The snare really is the main factor in determining the sound of a kit... you may only ever need 3 sets of Toms, kick and cymbals to get by.... but you'd want at least 10 snares!

The drumpack#2 has a kit called the 'jazzkit'
I LOVE this? What is this kit?
I still don't likle the 'rods'... this 'Jazzkit' dosen't sound like rods... but idf it is...well I like it anyway... what a great compliment to the DP#2 snare!
Also, I said I wasn't 'blown away' by the brush-pak... but by putting the snare on it's own cjannel and turning it up in volume it really is quite good very useable..
I REALLY like (as I've mentioned) the close mic'd drumpak#2 snare... but the standard one with the ambience sounds awesome too... really good ambience.
Well done
And I gotta say... I pulled up the default kit to compare it to the DP#2... and it is actually pretty close... it sounds great as well....
I think that it is the realism of how you've 'played' the samples and how you've 'packaged' them with the 'bounces' 'drags' and X-samples that makes DP#2 a real winner!

It's the standard DP2 kit but with the sizzle ride from the BrushPak.
It's mainly designed for stick-played jazz. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph
I'm in 'drum-kit-heaven'
I have had my DP#2 snare with the ambience up at about 15% playing one of your Jamstix 'skip beats' ....
.......and I've had it set up in cubase all day just been listening to it once an hour for about 60 seconds (all day)...
OH I just LOVE IT!!
I have fairly good monitors AUDIX PH15's they are small in size... but with this kit and this pattern playing it's like there is a living, breathing, drummer on a real kit in my room.... the 'ambience' sounds like it's coming off my very walls and not through some speakers!!
It's like I can hear 'inside' the actual kit... you know what I mean? I mean my ears can kinda percive that they are listening to a (stereo) point somewhere above the kick drum... in that space between the toms and the snare... very '3D'!!!
It bounces and moves the way a kit played by a really good drummer will 'bounce and move' and it pushes 'air' in a really good way.
Really liking those hi-hats too... and the kick is VERY VERY tatseful!
I love this kit!!!

Yeah I can imagine the hotrods won't suit everyone, but personally I really like them. They're great for when you're making a song that doesn't need particularly "in your face" drums and want something a little lighter. To me, hotrods in general have a really acoustic, earthy sound to them. I love the attack on the snare and toms that you get with hotrods, so this drumpak was really cool to get. The ride played with the hotrods also sounds so great I'm tempted to mix and match the stick kit with the hotrod kit, but I'm not sure that real drummers play with one stick and one hotrod... Though sometimes drummers will play with one mallet and one stick. |

I actually do that without hesitation, using rod hats and ride with stick toms, snare and cymbals. It isn't really cheating because you could do the same with proper EQing and FX as is often done in the studio.
For example: Carter Beauford's Custom A projection hats are really cutting in real life but in the recordings they sound much more like the DP2 rod hats. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

That's true... I could probably get away with mixing hihats and rides and maybe as far as the snare, but I'm not sure if I could get away with putting hotrod toms with stick drums, could I? They're pretty obvious when you play them quietly. |

This looks REALLY promising...
I´m imagining the different sounds from simply looking at the pics.
This will be a great tool for different coloration for sure. |

Yes, we've got a wide range here from brass to maple, 10" to 14" diameter and 3.5" to 7" depth. Heads are ranging from normal Ambassadors to Fibreskyn and even Kevlar. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

That's good news!! I'm really looking forward to this expansion, because as you said, the snare is the most defining element of a drumkit. February did you say? Perhaps January?
Either way, you guys rock!! |

Hi Ralph! I´ve bought jamstix and all drumpacks, I´m waiting for this good-looking (and sounding I hope) snare-pack. When are you going to release it?
Thank you and merry christmas |
