So, two questions really, both prompted by a song I am working on. Though not a drummer I have a very strong idea of how I want the drums to sound on this track (I know, typical guitarist control freak). I've been through just about every style and every intro and fill but can't find what I want. I admit I haven't really got to grips with fine tuning JS yet, so I'm sure there's something else I could be doing to achieve this. What I'm after is a drum track that drives the song along, with punctuated "stabs" that indicate the beginnings and ends of sections, as the guitar is fairly basic and repetitive I need the drums to provide the rhythm and interest in the song. Any pointers as to the kinds of settings I should be looking at? The song is in the vein of Tennage Fanclub, Big Star etc, melodic and flowing. Ideally I'd like the drum track to build throughout the song, dropping down where necessary but I'm not sure how to automate this kind of overall "rise".

Your best bet is something like this:

- use 'manual jam' and no input source

- build 4 rhythms that equate to 4 levels of busyness by using library
patterns and then fine-tuning them in the rhythm tab by taking some boxes away or adding them (experimentation). Keep the accent sliders zero in the quietest rhythm and then step them up in the other rhythms.

- arrange the rhythms in the arranger to follow your song dynamic

- add an automation envelope to your Jamstix MIDI track in the host on 'Velocity' and use it to draw the desired level of velocity throughout your arrangement

- finish it off with custom fills here and there and intro and ending
