Ralph
I loved what I heard this morning on that first MP3 demo you put out.
I l really do like to hear drums with no other instrumenst in the mix... any chance of a more raw drumpack#2 demo mp3s with no other instruments??

Also... what is it with people thinking that a bit-rate or a sample rate makes a better recording? (well... to a degree maybe..)
I just dug out my original Native Instruments Battery drums samples..

I never liked them, not since I bought them... and today for the first time in about 2 years I have loaded them...I opened them up in battery to see how they sounded being played by the Jamstix and to compare them to the basic Jamstix internal samples...

What a shock I got... I never liked them... but how bland and weak they sound after listening to BFD and Jamstix...

Ralph, your internal Jamstix samples sound way better than the Battery drums.
AND... the Battery 'boasts' 'pristinely' recorded 24 bit stereo samples..
Why bother to record 24 bit stereo samples when they sound so sterile and placid??

I really like what I heard on that Drumpack#2 mp3 (without instruments).

To me a snare should have rattle and squeaks and a nice warm natrual decay mixed in with a natrual room sound..

Your Drumpack#2 might be 'right on the money'... but to be honest... I need to hear the samples on their own to get a better idea.

Hey.. while we are on the subject.. what is the sample rate of your Drumpacks? It won't worry me if they are 64 bit or 12 bit as they sound good and thats what counts... but I'm interested to know.

Also on the basic Jamstix internal sounds.. the ambience.. is it a recorded room sound thay get s blended in or is it an atificial reverb ?

And finally... the drumpack#2... I presume this will have no ambience at all (apart from what is recorded in the rooms)??

I agree.

I also like the way you get that fuzzy snare rattle when other instruments are playing, usually the bass guitar. I wonder if a plugin could be designed for this? Has anyone thought of it before?

It would most likely have to be a seperate plugin added as an insert* on a bass track, and probably beyond the remit of Jamstix.

* EDIT: an auxiliary send/return might be more appropriate for this kind of effect, and panned to the same position as the drums so that they combine into one sound.

24-bit is chosen for a lowered noise floor. The higher bit rate the higher the theoretical signal-to-noise ratio. However, reality is different in my personal opinion. Most studio microphones have less than 90dB SNR, which 16-bit can easily do (up to 96dB). On such a signal, 24-bit would be wasted. Higher bit rates are important when adding samples to avoid noise increase through rounding but VST already uses 32-bit precision there.

In other words, unless your microphone+pre-amp deliver more than 96dB SNR, 24-bit sample resolution is pretty much useless.

There will be more demos, including pure drum ones.

All Jamstix samples are 16-bit /44.1kHz. The ambience in all samples is the natural ambience of the recording room. There are no artifical reverbs used (except for the jam blocks)

DrumPak #2 has the same kit in 4 different versions:

1 - Stick-played with ambience, just like DrumPak #1
2 - Rod-played with ambience
3 - Stick-played close stereo without ambience
4 - Rod-played close stereo without ambience

So you get both worlds!

That's funny. I'm a snare buzz fan myself and have actually thought about such a plugin Smile I do have a concept on how to do it but I doubt there's a real market for it. One day, when I get some time, I may just build that thing for fun.

There might be a market for it amongst Jamstix users, who tend to want these authentic touches. It could be included as a standalone plugin (like the AudioM8 plugin).

Ralph
Thanks... those three new demos where just what I wanted to hear.
I will be buying Drumpack#2.

You say it will be ready by the end of the month? thats 2 weeks away?

Plaese tell me... what kit was used?
Is it the Gretsch kit from drumpack#1?

Particularly the snare what is that? Is it wooden? it sounds wooden.

Also... have you cloned yourself? How can you be working on the demos and working on beta updates and seemingly answering e-mails and posting mesages 24 hours a day?

Yes, we are in final testing stages. It will be ready.

It's a Mapex M kit with remo heads. The kit has birch shells but with a final layer of maple. The cymbals are all Zildjian A and Meinl Lang. Yes, the snare is wooden.

I simply opened several instances of myself in my host Smile
Resistance is futile...

You must be a drummer yourself?
You know so much about drums.

I associate MAPEX drums with a very modern sound, a clean and hi-tech sound.

The sound I like comes from old 'clanky' Ludwig, Gretsch, pearl and premier kits of 50's, 60's and 70's vintage....

You've made this Mapex kit sound JUST like the kits I like... well done.

Any chance of a drumpack featuring a real 'used/vintage/garage' drumset... one that sounds just like one that the drummer in a local garage band might play?
