This is way too complicated for me to analyze in Sonar in 60/8. I'm sorry but a time grid reference is what I need. I wish I could spend a lot of time on this but I just can't. Hope you understand. Anything you can do to make it easier for me will aid in getting this done. I need a grid reference as in 'HiHat note on the 16th Eighth of the bar'.
Thank you! _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I don't think I can give you an exact grid ref.....therefore - could you please just play the file in Windows Media Player, then you'll hear what I'm getting at. Ignore the time sig etc - just hear what it sounds like.
A simple rhythm really, and i'm just wondering how you'd program it in JS - if you can in its current version.
Many thanks

It's a 32nd before the 2nd triplet note. The JS 1.4 rhythm GUI does not allow programming this.
By the way, technically it really is a 16th since the rhythm is so slow. That's why I favor grid terminology. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

You could export the JS arrangement to MIDI and then add the 32nds by hand for now. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Interesting. So...as you've stated already, 32nd notes aren't available in the current version. Will this sort of programming be possible in a future version? The kick-drum grid allows you to specify extra single beats up to 16ths (before or after a beat) - perhaps a similar hihat grid could be implemented, with 32nd notes?
Many thanks for your time, I'll leave you alone now!
Thank you

Hmm...I'm not keen on doing a lot of editing. I prefer the immediacy of Jamstix's jam mode. If a future Jamstix can implement more complex hihat patterns then I'm happy to wait for it.

Jamstix 2 will have 32nd support in the rhythm GUI.
When the JS2 beta comes out next year, I encourage you to test-drive it to give us input into any other intricacies that you're after so we can make sure JS2 will support it.
Thanks for your input! _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Rockville
Thanks for the suggestion, but the time sig is a slow 4/4 sig with a hihat triplet on each beat (listen to the example tunes mentioned). The extra hihat hits as discussed are basically making the hihat rhythm more complex - to add a bit more swing and flair to the hihat triplets - and which will hopefully be achievable in JS v2.
I'm not sure that 7/8 would help as we're talking about a 4/4 time sig....not really compatable with 7/4. In fact 7/8 is quite unusual - there's not many tunes I can think of that are in 7/8....... "Unsquare Dance" by David Brubeck; the verse parts of "All You Need Is Love" by The Beatles.

Hi J.W.
I think I see, Redhouse is in 12/8 time with the drummer playing 16th triplets and you want eg an extra hit somewhere in one the triplets something like two hits between the 1st and 3rd hit of the triplet. I can only assume you dont have access to Cubase or logic or the like where you could place these extra hits anywhere you like. I've only just got Jamstix so I'm not certain but perhaps if you had a midi file of the groove you need you could load it into Jamstix or perhaps use it with the learn function. If you dont have access to Cubase and its only a few bars I could do it for you, or if you want a midi file for Redhouse I have one that I got free on the internet I could send you. |

Rockville,
I don't have Cubase. I use n-Track, which I find it a bit crashy with Jamstix on my machine, so I could posibly invest in another recording program. I currently use SAVHost - a simple host program.
Thanks for the offer of adding the extra notes, but I have programmed an adequate 12/8 rhythm in Jamstix which is ok for me. I don't want to get more involved in programming that though (i.e. getting into midi editing), and I'm happy to wait for a later version of JS to get more complex hihat patterns (it seems that I'll need 32nd notes, which aren't currently available in Jamstix). In the meantime JS is superb as it is - I was just being fussy!
Generally, I try not to get too bogged down with programming and the like. I'm of the philospohy where the minimum of twiddling around with software and devices the better, allowing more time and energy for creativity. I'm always on a quest for the simplest set up altogther..in fact I have considered turning my back on computers with their crashes and associated problems. For general tracking I'm using a standalone recorder (cassette-based I might add..I love the sound). I still mix and master on the computer (using n-Track). Only Jamstix brought me back to PC music! And even then, I just record the jammed output to the seperate recorder.
