I want to use the built in Sonar 5 VST.

I basiically want to make the arrangement in jamstix, then use it in Sonar.

Ther seems to be two ways: export the arrangement to a MIDI file and play it back on a soft syth, or run the output of Jamstix audio to an output port and back into the board to record as an audio track.

Any other possibilities?

Not sure if I understand correctly but I think what you are looking for is 'Freeze Synth'. Open the instrument rack and freeze Jamstix. This will give you wave files that you can manipulate. If you ever need to change the arrangement, just unfreeze, edit and re-freeze.

I must be doing something wrong.

I inserted a vst synth, which creates a MIDI and audio track.

The MIDI track has a record capability, but nothing is recorded. The audio track has the synth. It does not have the ability to record. Only Mute or Solo.

Freeze on either of these tracks does nothing.

I am looking to have a permanant record of jamstix, hopefully MIDI, but audio would work.

For a MIDI record you can use 'Export To MIDI' in the arranger.

The best way is to freeze Jamstix. Sonar gets confused because there are no events in the jamstix MIDI track so it doesn't want to freeze it. Simply add a dummy event (note or controller) at the beginning and end of your song in the Jamstix MIDI track. Sonar will now freeze JS.
