|
|
I should warn you all - I've never used software VST's before (I'm a hardware man until now) I'm using Cakewalk Home Studio Version 2 and latest demo version. I did run the Cakewalk VST / DXi converter, set the properties for everything and life is good go far.
As a test I loaded some other VST/DXi synth racks, and they work fine. I can control from my keyboard with no problem, so this proves I have the conversion and properties down.
I follow the directions to set up and install the program and have read this section 100 times. I can hear the drums when I play my keyboard, but the jam functions do not work. I have tried audio and Midi - no dice.
Everything seems to load just fine, no problems there. I have it set to add it's own midi track and audio out. Any ideas where I'm screwed up?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob and welcome to the board!
Did you click 'Free Jam' in the Jamstix jam tab?
Do you have the sequencer running? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph, and thanks for the welcome!
Yes, I have clicked the Jab tab and the play button. I can hear the individual drums playing when I play my keyboard, but I cannot make it play with me.
I tried going all audio using the audioM8 as an insert effect in the track. It does not respond when I play. If I change the properties in the VST/DXi dialog to be the same as Jamstix, it loads as it's own track in Home Studio, and the needle does then respond to audio. It does not howver, when applied as an FX inside the track.
I then tried going midi. I exited the program, changed the properties for audioM8 back to an effect (not to open it's own midi track) - even though it appears to not be required for midi use. I again followed the instructions and nothing. The "R" available for arming a track to record is grayed out on the jamsitx track. I do have the track monitoring set up properly, so I should be able to hear that track - but no dice.
I'm missing something here. I have it set up as instructed and have spent some time examining each Jamstix screen and have "tried this and that" without success. Any assistance - a step by step maybe, is very much appreciated. I would really like to get this working in demo form, then purchase the program. I am the world's worst drummer (I'm a keyboard and bass player) so this program will be a godsend for me.
Thanks again.
Bob
p.s. There's no way for me to attach some screen shots, but I could e-mail them if anyone is interested. |

Let's start with just these steps:
- open HS2 and load Jamstix
- click 'Free Jam' in the Jamstix jam tab
- arm a track in HS2 for recording and hit Record so HS2 plays
You should see the beat counter in Jamstix count up in synch with HS2 and after a few beats the drums should play. Also, the green LED in the right-bottom of Jamstix should light up. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
So simple. I did just as you described and it works! Thanks so much! But I am not sync'd to anything. The drums are playing on their own. I'll see what I can figure out for routing. Also, how can I route the drumming instructions to my Motif ES so I can use those drums rather than the computer versions?
Thanks again!

Many people use Jamstix without MIDI or audio input and control velocity via MIDI automation.
However, just feed MIDI to the Jamstix MIDI track to have the jam react to that data. If the velocity slider in Jamstix falls too low as you do this, adjust the input trim knob up.

In HS4 you cannot route MIDI output from Jamstix to somewhere else because the Cakewalk VST wrapper doesn't support it. You either need to use DirectiXer to make this possible or a different host with native VST support (Tracktion, Cubase, n-Track etc.) _________________ Ralph Zeuner

How do I feed it midi data (route the track from my midi enabled track in HS?) There are no midi factories around here, so the automation comment bounced right off. I have no idea what that is or what it means.
Thanks again

Please look at the document 'Free Jam Quick Start' PDF in your Jamstix start menu. The instructions for Sonar in that document should match HS2 fairly closely.
Let me know if you need more help. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks so much for your help.
Please don't take this as a slight to your product, but I've decided to forget the computer - I have too much trouble in general with music software (the lexicon alone is hard to figure out). I just don't grasp the concepts very quick I guess and don't have the patience to hang in for endless hours of experimentation. I unloaded the demo.
Going back to hardware.
Thanks again.

No problem, Bob. If you ever want to give the 'soft stuff' a try again, we'll be here to help. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
