I am running the latest version ( and I guess sadly the last) of JS4.

I am trying out something I have never spent any real time learning which is the load a MIDI file onto a track in Reaper and hit the MIDI learn button to turn it ON (Blue) in JS to see how and if it works.

I loaded the MetalPak - Natural kit, dropped in my MIDI file, hit the MIDI learn button and then hit Play in Reaper. It appeared to work and sounded great to me.

I then hit the MIDI learn button to turn it Off (No longer Blue).

Playback did not sound right. It was like the swing was all messed up. I played around with this sliders and other options. No luck.

I searched the forum and found this thread:

https://rayzoon2.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7859&highlight=midi+learn

Azimuth asked about "Quantize Midi Import" and the thread was over.

I rechecked my setup and indeed is what Disabled (Not Blue) like I thought.

For kicks I enabled it (Blue) and sure as sh!t after going through the steps above, it played back correctly.

Maybe I am getting what Enabled and Disabled is for this one?

It works for what I want if I do what I described.

I also tried this by using the Import style prior to changing "Quantize Midi Import" and got the same results.

This is a very useful option for me and I am NOW learning it.

Brian

I decided to see what happens if I drag a 1- measure long MIDI file onto the Groove sheet.

With Quantize MIDI Import Enabled (Blue):

Playback sounds just like Import and MIDI Learn. Jerky

I did however notice, and maybe this is how it was when I was messing about yesterday, Timing Offsets (which coincidentally are also Blue.) I then copied that contents of that bar with CTRL/A then CTRL/C. Cleared all of the hits, clicked the upper leftmost cell and pasted with CTRL/V. It played back correctly! Noice. Swing and all.

With Quantize MIDI Import Disabled (NOT Blue):

I figured this should not matter but it did.

After dragging and dropping the same 1-measure file, I DID NOT see Timing Offsets however playback sounded what some would call normal. But knowing that this MIDI file has some swing in it, I knew it was not 100% correct.

I think that does it for now. As noted before Jamstix still does what I want it do as long as I know how to talk nice to it. This IS like a real drummer. Glad it does not drink beer too.

Now I know why there was no JamBass or whatever that old idea that I seem to recall Ralph floating a long time ago. Who could put up with that?

i think what i am seeing is most likely do to my not so clear understanding of how Jamstix handles swing maybe.

during my testing i was not using a style or player.

Hi Brian,

How's it going, hope all is well on your end of the connection. If I remember correctly Ralph implied in a post long ago that the Quantize midi was intended mainly for adding a midi clip that you intended to have a drummer model "interpret" afterwards. I think I'm remembering that correctly. It makes sense that if you add a clip with swing in it that Jamstix would align it with the grid while quantizing, eliminating the swing, at least to me anyway.

Jamstix 2 allows you to quantize the import data or not, which yields the following results:

Quantized Import
- timing is exact after import
- drummer model can apply its own feel to the timing afterwards

Unquantized Import
- timing is whatever the data had (special feel or sloppy etc.)
- drummer model won't change the feel/timing afterwards

With Quantize MIDI Import Enabled, the MIDI is not Quantized but I can see that timing variation on the hits that are swung although initial playback is jerky.

I can Copy all of the hits in that measure, Clear it and then Paste what I just copied and all is good.

With Quantize MIDI Import Disabled, the behavior jives with what Ralph mentioned. So somewhat opposite.

Anyway I can make it work for what I want so I am cool with it.
