Hi I just downloaded the free version and it looks great. As there is no good upgrade path from basic to full I would want to buy the top $299. However it seems that development for this product is dead and I wonder if it’s foolish to invest so much on something that may not be developed further or even have low support going forward.

Can anyone tell me if there are plans for Jamstix to evolve further and when?

Thanks

Hi, There is only one person who can honestly answer that question for you and it isn't me. I wish I could give you a definitive yes or no but the honest truth is that your guess is as good as mine.

Not trying to be a wise guy, I would love to know the answer myself, just being honest.

I wouldnt advise purchase personally, and I have the whole enchilada myself and love it and use it regularly. I'm on PC which helps considerably as IMO Jamstix has never been able to keep up with Mac OS changes. Ralph has generally kept running the Holiday sales around Christmas, so if you're still risk bound I would personally hold out until then. I am super happy with my investment in Jamstix and have more than gotten my money's worth. I've looked for alternatives and bought a bunch of other tools that don't match the capabilities of Jamstix or even come close. But the writing on the wall seems to be saying 'CAVEAT EMPTOR!" in big, bold letters. The last BETA update for PC was October 2021. (That said, it has been mostly trouble free and in that time I've gone from Windows 7 to 8.1 to 10 and am now on Windows 11).

Ah Thanks Guys!
Well all good things come to an end I suppose. However if there is good discount in a Christmas sale then I think I may take the plunge anyway.
Was thinking of getting MDrummer because I like the way I can manually play the parts at will to give it a real drummer feel. But I’ve plenty of time to decide between now and Christmas.
Cheers Cool

I might seem like a leaf in the wind, but getting back to Azimuth's point, no one else can determine for you what level of risk makes sense for you. If you are leaning toward a purchase the $99 Jamstix 4 pkg would get you quite a ways, that you could build on at a reduced price whenever the sale comes around. What nobody can answer (except Ralph) is what happens if it stops working all of a sudden (or more likely(?), if a new feature or capability is needed (like vst3 for example...)

If it matters, I have been using Jamstix since around 2007 (I think) and I have never had it stop working.

Lucky I guess.

Same type of experience here. But I am concerned enough about its future to keep looking for alternatives. I personally think it would be reckless to recommend it without some warnings when it hasn't been updated in AGES. If someone NEEDED VST3 for example, or needed to update their OS to something that Jamstix doesn't run on. (Lots of MAC users on these forums have raised these types of issues). The OP asked about buying the whole package and whether it was recommended. I am going to continue to use it but don't think I can recommend it without at least pointing out the risks.

I've pretty much decided that if there is a 60% or so discount at Christmas then I'll buy the full package.

I like enough of what I see in the free version to give it a go.

Sadly the free version does not let me test the 'export midi' function but I assume it works as it should and will export the exact song performance to the DAW.

If this is the case I'm not too bothered about furure OS changes. I have a few windows 10 & 11 machines that will be good enough to start the writing process on so if in a few years I have to write on one of those and then transfer to a more current workstation I dont think it will be a massive headache. So barring and EMP

cheers Guys

@Joe_rayz1

Just to give you a heads up since you've made a point regarding exporting MIDI from Jamstix. MIDI export, as designed and it stands now, does have some issues for some users. However recording the MIDI out of Jamstix into your DAW works perfectly. The only downside to having to do it this way is that it must be done in real-time. I'd suggest placing a Faraday cage around your old computer just to ensure its continued availability. LOL

Just came to post the same thing and Azimuth has already covered it (as usual, lol). Looks like the free version does midi mapping.

I don't see it becoming incompatible any time soon - if there isn't a vst3, this port might be good. Otherwise, it does what it says on the tin.

Let's ask the question:

is development needed in your case?
