Any tips on how to get a fat kick sound without causing spikes or clipping would be appreciated.

A good first point to experiment with is to see if a boost around 60 Hz helps. The frequency can be another, depending on kick. The boost can be big in some cases. A NY channel for kick and snare has big influence in sound, too, specially in punch. If you don’t know what a New York channel is, it is a parallel channel where you load a compressor and then you send in parallel kick and snare to it. The compressor works hard, the signal is over compressed, but you must mix the right amount of the NY channel with the original. NY compression can be used with other drum kit elements, too. You can even have a drum kit NY channel and a kick+snare NY channel acting together, but I am deviating now from your question.

Thanks for the response. What about the frequencies below 60 Hz? It seems like they're not useable or practical. Is it necessary to hi-pass when using samples?

Depends on the sample but I do not see what harm it would do if you did set up a low cut filter depending on the style of music.
