Hi, I've been experimenting with Jamstix and I'm curious as to how I should handle situations such as

    A song part has distinct sounding bars like, the first 4 bars are soft and the next 4 are heavy

    The drums are playing a non-uniform hits to match another instrument (dotted quarter, half note, eight note hits in a part for example)



Should I be filling in those purely manually? And if so, is there a way to play my rhythm out on a MIDI keyboard so I don't have to write a MIDI part out to a file and import it to Jamstix? I'm aware I could turn use MIDI playback but I'd like to take advantage of the brain fleshing out any MIDI parts I play manually

For the first, I think you should divide it into more parts.

For the second I have the same question. In a song of mine I have a transition where guitar and bass play a transition melody, which has a lot of different rhythmic figures and I want the drums do something similar in some parts, emphasizing snare and playing some cymbals. But I kicked this task to the future while I am figuring out how to do it with Jamstix. I guess I should program at least the basics and then import into Jamstix to let it do the drummer job. But sincerely I don’t know the best way. And not being drummer myself and with low drumming skills I have a hard time figuring out something tasteful.

So I ended up somewhat figuring out the first bullet point by automating the power level to drop while using the Auto Snare brain feature to soften the snare at the low parts. It works pretty well, though now my next goal is to find a way to remove an entire drum from being used during the low power parts. The second bit, I'm still trying to figure out. It'd be great if I could just manually make some of the drums then let the bnrain take over fills, humanization and accentation and I'm sure there is a way but this is a pretty beefy piece of software that I gotta explore more

After I sent my post I was thinking that automating the power would be a way too. Glad you figured out this alternative. Now, how to eliminate a drum without defining a new section, I don’t know. I don’t know if, for example, putting a drum far from the drummer can be automated. I have never tried.

Regarding programming some simple groove and after that let Jamstix end the job, that can be done. Here is a very old short tutorial on that:

I would create a short one or two bar section of what you want, then save that as a style and then let Jamstix drummer do the rest.

This is a pretty neat tutorial, I'll give that a spin! I just wish I didn't have to create a MIDI file to import, my ideal workflow would be to bang out the notes on my MIDI controller in my DAW and import the MIDI part from there into Jamstix

You can do as Grem_Songs suggests, too: that is to create a groove within JS and save it as style. For example, like Ralph pointed out here:
