Hey Jae,
Which fill are you referring to in the video? |

oh god I don't believe I didn't give a timestamp.
22 seconds in - the weird thing is the guy is just saying it is literally just sixteenth notes on the snare lol |

first off, you're a godsend. I wish I could do something in return.
hey there, I rendered out a few things:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6x4yvdtemo8z4jb/AACupKhSP1nEN5xMuA3pFmSOa?dl=0
so, I am going to try and understand what is going on here, because I really want to learn this the best I can, but seem to do it as I go.
So first off, I see that a j2d file can be a file OR a song. The way to import this is to add it to your fills folder, you can also add a new folder. No drag and drop?
Anyway, I find that fills folder to be AWESOME!
ok so next up, I loaded your fill, and here's what I see:
the first 3 hits have a "+48" thing on it, which seems to be a VERY slight delay. a 48th of a beat? and then you can alter the timing further with the MS knob.
the fourth snare hit is a single hit, delayed by 5ms
now the hit on the 3e is a "bounced" hit. Is this the kind where if you put a bunch in a row you would get a roll?
the timing is not altered, the next one (3and), also bounced, is delayed 4ms. not sure why this one is altered in some way. A feel thing?
the 3a(uh) is a double hit, and it seems to be high power and only delayed by 1ms. now, I can't really hear what this double does.
it seems when I roll over hits, it doesn't play them as double or bounce, but as the regular snare hit.
the rest of it might have different delays, etc...
so basically, am I accurate in my description here?
how do you decide what to alter? I got rid of the delay of the first 3 hits, I listened to the video and it was spot on, but imo, it doesn't sound great, so I figure instead of perfectly replicating the drummer, I'd make it "better" but what do you think?
thank you so much, I always learn a lot. Also, the songs we worked on are not in vain. More is happening and more tunes are getting done! Blade is coming up! |

In the "Groove" window of that song part, right click the "Feel" generator label and 3 hidden controls will appear. Turn the Snr/Tm Double knob to 100% and then see if you can hear the double hit then. It's in the manual but it seems that not too many users are aware of them.

That's another Jamstix gem that I find a lot of people are not aware of either. There are some killer fills in there and the Preview checkbox is awesome for checking them out.

Yeah that's just a feel thing that made it sound more natural to me. I like to add a little delay sometimes when the drummer is transitioning from the groove to a fill. Just a personal choice that seemed to work here.

Yes Jamstix only previews single hits when mousing over the icons.

The only delays I added were the first 3 +48 and the +4 on the (3and). The rest were added by JS. I wish I could give you an exact answer as to how I decide what to alter but there isn't one. It's just a matter of listening and having some experience working with some really great Drummers.

Try auditioning different kits with the fill and see if that makes it sound better. A lot of times that can make a huge difference. Do whatever works for you Jae. If a different fill works and sounds better to you, that's all that matters, do it. LOL |
