I wrote this the other day, and just went ahead and threw a bunch of stuff together.

What I'm looking for as far as suggestions:

- mixing
-- the bass is just impossible to sit right, but this could also be because I barely performed it, it is a fender VI bass and it's me playing it, and im sure the latter is the problem, but what are your tips for fitting bass in?
-- Do the strings sound harsh to you?
-- Arrangement wise, what works? What doesn't work?

any constructive feedback is welcome

The song will be played out just as an acoustic song - it doesn't need all the production, but I want a version that DOES have some degree of production. And the string lines to me sound very nice. Not so sure about all of the electric guitar lines.

personally my goals are to work on some of the lyrics/vocals but again I wrote this in a matter of hours and got these tracks done in a couple of days so I just wanted to kinda ride that wave and then let it sit a bit, play it out a little.

if there are any tutorials or anything like that you would suggest, please let me know!

Right now I am more interested in the songwriting process and such because that has been difficult in the past, now it's all coming out, so I might as well follow that and then work on the mixing and such later.

Well, when someone ask for critics I try my best, but in this case I must say I like the tune in several dimensions. Strings sound good to me, so as guitars and drums.

Regarding bass, yes, for me it should sound better. As I am a very very amateur mixer, but enthusiastic, maybe to take my advice is not the best idea. But I can tell you what thing I would try if we are thinking bass will no be recorded again:

-a not so wide (but not narrow) boost in the low zone, let’s say between 50-100 Hz, you must search the exact point. That is to emphasize the soul of the bass.
-another boost in the highs (highs for bass), some few kHz.
-investigate if a cut in the mids helps to clear the sound, eliminating boxiness.
-if you turn up bass volume maybe it will be necessary to investigate if some compression will be needed.
-in an aux bus or FX channel where you send some signal from the main bass track you could have some other processing that you may mix with the main track. Something that many times helps a lot is to add saturation. Maybe this can be equalized or simply low cut filtered. When heard together with the mix, in even very saturated basses you don’t hear the saturation, but it is there, adding harmonics. This helps to hear well the bass in low quality systems too.

Regarding vocal (nice singing, by the way), when I hit play I felt the voice was too loud but after some seconds I felt it was alright, because in this kind of song (I have a Dylan reminiscence) voice is a very protagonist. Maybe it is necessary to find a balance or maybe a compression can help: one compressor with fast attack and release, high ratio, to control the peaks, and another compressor with a more slow attack, low ratio, to even the volume. Not always are both needed, but with dynamic voices it can be a good idea.
