I was working on a piece this week that called for some Indian tabla rhythms. I must add that we don't actually need tabla drums, but the rhythms should sound Indian. What would you suggest Ralph - I have the EastWest Ra virtual instrument, which has a full tabla set, but I don't actually know how to play tablas!

I can't help with that at this time since I would have to study it myself first Smile A plan for an Indian percussion add-on is on the backburner, though.

Don't spend time on this Ralph, as I guess it is quite a minority interest. But perhaps something for the future if others are interested.

totally not a minority thing. I would LOVE THIS!!!!! (so two of us make a majority? Let's just pretend Smile )

A good place to start would be the beatles, george harrison, and ravi shankar (for a crossing over from a more popular type of music)

we're a troika now so they'll have to listen! Twisted Evil

I would be interested in this too although I believe it would be a rather immense undertaking.

I found this to be a fascinating look at tabla playing:

It's a Quartet now...

Indian rythms means instant 20 minutes guitar solos...

I know Indian percussion is much more than just the tabla, but a good tabla player will be able to explain the various tals and bols to enable Ralph to work out a way to use these in Jamcussion.

Perhaps it will not be possible for Jamstix to present the complete picture of Indian rhythms, but it would be useful if it can offer a way of playing Indian rhythms that can be used in fusion styles. Just something that gives the impression of a real tabla player would be a very important step forward for those who want an Indian flavor in their composition.

I personally would love Tablas!

Actually the more percussion players the better Smile

Cheers,

A while back, I found the following page:

http://www.khafif.com/rhy/rhylist.html

It's a collection of Arabic (sorry, not Indian) rhythms, but a suitably inspired and energetic Jammer might be able to do wonderful things with that list and Jamcussion.

Non-Western percussion can lend some very interesting feelings to a track, as can re-maps. (I once re-mapped a Jamstix blues jam onto a Roland HPD-15 with tablas and other unusual drums, and liked the result... haven't gone back to it, though.) Unusual drums plus unusual rhythms would be a LOT of fun Smile

I don't know if this would help with tabla rhythmns, but it's graet for AfroCuban

Yes, we are already looking into 'Euclidean Rhythms' for Jamstix. We are actually working on a version for drum set patterns at this time but this may find its way into JC as well.
