So, I was wondering -
I just get the "feeling" that sometimes the drummer is a bit too loose, or unnatural in a way. Is there a way to alter how tight a drummer is?
What about those setting in the options like arm speed? What do they do? Are those related to "enable limb controls?" |

Hey man
One thing Ive learned about Jamstix are there many ways to accomplish a specific goal. I am no expert, by any means, which you know, but I can say, the drummer sometimes makes a difference. Perhaps settings the drummer to “machine” (if you dont have ultimate there are SO many different styles and drummers), And then changing the swing yourself either manually with a midi keyboard, or inputting it directly in the settings - for instance, on the groove page, you can double click the different parts and set the difference on the drummer’s adherence to tempo and what not....
I mean, that’s just one way I could think of at least....simple, but effective. Im sure you know about that, but I thought I’d just throw it out there for anyone’s use....
Later dude |

thanks!
I have always found that, for some reason, I end up finding Steven Slate and Toontrack loops more tight and solid than jamstix.
Maybe it's more of a mapping issue, but I just love jamstix sooo much
I was wondering if maybe jamstix is "too human" at times. |

Hey Jason,
How tight a performance is can depend a lot on the Player chosen. Some are a lot looser than others. The 2 main ways I tend to tighten or loosen things up is:
1) The Timing Vary Feel control. Pocket can also make things "feel" tighter with everything else in the mix.
2) Select all cells in the Bar Editor (Ctrl+A) and then use the Timing control below the Song Sheet.
The Arm Speed and Foot Speed settings control how quickly the player can either hit the same Kit piece again or traverse to the next Kit piece. If you disable limb controls it disables all of these timing functions.
Sometimes I'm afraid that we are getting so used to hearing everything locked to a grid that actual Human performance is now becoming "unnatural" to a lot of listeners. |

I won’t say its because of this thread, but it certainly made me more aware of it - I’m having more trouble with the midi generation than the actual “sound” of the drums.....
I think its called the pocket or something, but I am now semi-struggling to get an accurate reproduction out in MIDI playback or with any VST playthrough
One of the things i absolutely LOVE about Jamstix is the ability to play through another Drum VST, and it sounds incredible in the mix down, but when it comes to recording and editing, it makes me nervous to even tamper with any settings for fear of loss of consistency
I guess that’s one thing I have to learn with practice...but you’re not alone dude. |

I think there are some things lost in translation to SD3 or SSD5.
this is kind of a known problem, and I don't complain too much about it, because I know how difficult it must be to attempt to support all of it.
But I will soldier on as always. There's a reason I've been using this program for 10 years or whatever. It works.
and the userbase is very helpful. |

The main reason I love JS4 is that loose feel. I find it difficult to play along with EZ Drummer, or even Addictive Drums. There is no pocket. And that's the main thing I look for when I play. Took me years of fiddling with drum machines and never really being happy before I came across JS and the feel I was looking for.

I think I know what your saying. But we have to remember, it is a computer program and will respond to our commands. We have to learn the commands. And for a program like JS, I had to sit with the manual to get what was going on. It's a very powerful program. Lots of options that affect one another.
There is a slider on the Groove page that you can adjust so that the Brain follows the Drummer more or the Style more, and this could be one way of getting the patterns you want.
But the sure way of getting what you want exactly, is filing in the beats in the grid. And don't disable Limb Control. This will give you a part you want and still sound like a real drummer. Do it all the time.

There are several ways to save what you have before you mess with settings. Save as a song, save a restore point, or for a work in the Bar Editor (and this is a great feature!!) the Quick Save/Load in the Bar menu. |

It's just so much easier for me to have conversations on here. I know it's kind of tedious, but people describing the workflow is more helpful to me than a manual |

Agreed. Sometimes with a manual I have to read it three, four , five times before I finally get it. The Jamstix Classic Style is a great example. It took me a while, and had to read it several times over before I realized that the all the dots/circles in the grid are ALL notes. Top 4 are the beats, the three under each beat is also notes, not Selections as I thought! This opened this Style for me. I realized with this Style and the Timing/Swing adjustments in the Song section and in the Bar section, you could do any beat you can think of!!
But yet, look at the manual, it states it right there!! I just didn't get it. SO it's good for us to talk and just help each other out.
JS4 is really a great program. |

Don't forget that you can also mousewheel the "dots" to adjust the velocity of the hits. I did not realize that for a VERY long time until jas_lan pointed it out in a post. |
