So Ive hated Pro Tools for almost the whole time I’ve dealt with DAWs, and I gave up with PT10 after Avid screwed up the gold standard for studio recording and production by going non-proprietary and cross grade to all platforms, which wasn’t a good pivot....so I wasnt sure which DAW to get for Window 10 64. I first eliminated Fruity loops and bitwig because they aren’t for actual instruments/musicians, of course, i know they can do it, but that’s not where they are geared towards. GarageBand and logic might even be the “best” in terms of stability, but they are Mac only, and I’m on win 10. Reason was ruled out simply because i dont see the price reflecting the value, like the way Reaper does.

I narrowed it down to Cubase 10.5, Ableton Live 10, and studio one v4. I took out studio one v4 because its a simplified Cubase/PT, and I am so glad i did because they released v5 the same week, and I would’ve been livid to buy the old software. So it was Cubase vs Ableton, and because Ableton is much more geared towards EDM/Techno/House or electronica (however you would categorize “music” that DJs make) it became apparent that the clear choice and winner for a Windows 10 64 bit was cubase 10.5 ....

finally, I read somewhere Cubase is MEANT for Windows, so since I had 64 bit I went with what seemed to be the strongest, most powerful DAW: Idk if its true, which is why I’m asking here, since a lot of the members are knowledgeable and objectively honest, and I went with Steinberg....

So luckily, there is a sale going on (right now) where cubase is 40% off or so...like I paid $300 for the Cubase Pro 10.5 and the dongle, which I understand is a great discount....I was just curious: does anyone else use Cubase ? Did you upgrade/update during this sale?

What video/tutorials do you use? I was so impressed with ask.video(macprovideo) that I purchased their Cubase 10 tutorials, except I wish they had one for the 10.5 update..I highly recommend Ask.video from the couple of days Ive been working on it, its been really helpful

So, if you like, tell us what you like about Cubase over other DAWs, and what version do you use, and do you feel like the upgrades/updates are worth it? Or have you stopped at a certain Cubase version and just kept working on that one?

I’m just starting to hit an intermediate level in the studio. So I’m looking for some tips and pointers, even if you just throw in a link to a YouTube video that you found very helpful

Thank you

Hello CR_holdin,

I use Cubase since years and have 10.5 since the last update (I forgot when I updated). My favorite channel is the one of Chris Selim, Mixdown.online. He works with Cubase and he is very didactic

https://www.youtube.com/c/Mixdownonline

He has aside a paid Cubase course, too, mainly based upon 9.5 version, but with some updated videos for 10 and 10.5. It is very recommendable, in my opinion, and it has an optional course about drums, voice and bass editing. In short (I guess next days or weeks) he will release a course on mixing, all within Cubase and with stock plugins.

The other channel I like very much is the one of Joe Gilder, Home Studio Corner

https://www.youtube.com/user/HomeStudioCorner

He works with Studio One, though, but from seeing it I find it is a very powerful, flexible and well designed DAW. I think if I wasn’t working with Cubase I would use Studio One.

Regards.

Hey Knopf,

Thank you for that recommendation. That looks like a fantastic course, somewhat akin and equivalent to the axe fx 3 class i am currently enrolled in. That will be my next course.

As I also thought, studio one is probably the next “best” after Cubase, but I ruled it out because right after I nearly purchased v4.62, v5 was released without notice, so I would’ve been quite annoyed to have paid $200+ dollars to need the upgrade a week later...

My ask.video/MVpro course is based on Cubase 10, so as long as there are updates in the subscription, that’ll be fine.

May i ask, what made you update to this version particularly??I bought this because they said it refined all of the version while adding the elements that made pro tools stand out for production (in other words whatever it lacked that pro tools possessed it has since made up for).

best regards,
CR

Hello CR_holdin,

actually I have updated since version 8 or 8.5. I can’t say anything about Protools or compare with it, because I haven’t followed its development. Some channels, like Recording Revolution or another one in Spanish that I know work with PT. Each time an update comes I get it, after checking the new things that come with it. But I think, if I would miss an update and then get the following, the price would be the same (or almost, I believe) as taking the first an then the second. So I prefer to be always with the last version. But I think too, someone that doesn’t want to update too oft could work many years this way without problems.

Thanks for your reply

Pro tools is the industry standard, or was, I should say

I see most studios either going towards Studio one, Ableton or Cubase nowadays

Cubase 10.5 pro has more than I need for my home studio , but 40% off an update seems hard to pass up(to me steinberg coding is the best , along with jamstix I think you have all you need for a small band )

BTW I wanted to add, if Anyone needs video tutorials or an online visual course for Cubase 10, Ask.video in the App Store has the best online courses Ive ever tried or seen - aka MVP/macvideopro, its like $30 for the whole thing and I think its invaluable.

Yes, I know this about Protools. A friend of mine had a commercial studio and worked with it, but this is the nearest I have been from it. Some channels and courses that I have followed were done with PT, too.

I began myself in the 90’s in my 20’s very prehistoricaly doing things with the shareware Goldwave and Cooledit, but they weren’t multitrack so to mix something was a nightmare, but I was very enthusiastic with the edition and the effects, although I had no idea about mixing. This was the first time I knew something about compressors and other tools. My way to record and mix was: I recorded something in one track (file) and simultaneously in a cassette recorder. Then I played the cassette and recorded the second track and then mixed both manually. I still keep the things I recorded this way. I had no interface and I plugged the electric guitar directly to the mic input. For my acoustic I had a piezo with very low output, but I built a preamp with operational amplifiers. Later I knew Adobe Audition (multitrack, wow!), realized that they bought Cooledit, and tried it for a while. After that I knew Cubase and stayed there forever. But there are DAWs that for me seem to be very good though: Logic, Studio One (very nice), even Reaper (one thinks that it is not so good, because of the price, but I think you can do a great lot of things with it).

And regarding ask.video: I was there yesterday and ended keeping
a course about mastering that I ended in one day. It is your fault!

Wow, when there is a will, there is a way, indeed. That is commendable that you even attempted doing all that for recording man.

And I’m glad you found it just as impressive as I did, I had no second thought buying the courses myself, they are that good...
