Hi from another new and happy customer. I have only spent a couple of hours getting to know Jamstix but I am already impressed. Being an "old school" hobby recordist I am used to working with drum machines. I could never get good results from filling in piano rolls or banging on a midi keyboard, so Jamsticks is a great solution for me. There is a steep learning curve but I am willing to climb it.

I have used n-Track Studio for the last couple of years as it excels in simple audio recording but now I want to use more midi and vsti instruments so I am trying Cubase LE. Jamstix seems to work OK as far as I have tried it, except I can't get it to follow midi velocity, the slider stays fixed even though I have unlocked it. Anyone know of any issues I should be aware of?

Happy trackery to all, cheers

Does the little yellow LED in the right bottom corner of Jamstix light up while Cubase is playing?

Thanks for the quick response.

Using my external keyboard I recorded one midi track on channel 1 with a simple bass guitar part. The track output goes to the external keyboard which generates the sound.

As per the manual, I added another midi track and put Jamstix as an instrument, also on channel 1.

If I send the midi output of the bass track to Jamstix, then the little yellow light wakes up and Jamstix does its stuff. But I can't hear the bass any more. With the midi output going to the keyboard, so I can hear the bass, Jamstix does not see the midi (no yellow light).

I'm sure I've missed something obvious. I'm grateful for your patience.

Cheers
TB

The solution depends on your host. Some hosts allow you to send MIDI data to two places (your synth and Jamstix). In others you have to duplicate the bass track and send one to the synth, the other to Jamstix. And then there are others where you can copy/paste a reference to your bass MIDI data to another track.

Many thanks for the advice. It seems that Cubase LE only allows one midi "out" selection per track. There's a thing called "Inspector" where you select midi source and output for each track. I'll try duplicating the midi track as you suggest.

Don't know if LE has this, but other versions of Cubase have a MIDI send channel as well as in/out channels. It would be a separate tab on the Inspector. If you have MIDI send, use this to send data to Jamstix in addition to playing your MIDI instruments. You won't need to duplicate tracks then.

I don't know if Cubase still does this, but it used to have a "ghost" facility where you could copy parts of tracks and when you changed the master track, all ghost copies changed as well. This would help if you do need to have a separate track.

Thanks John, I'll try to find the midi send in Inspector.

One big advantage of duplicating the midi track for JS is that you can draw a volume envelope to control JS exactly how you want, independent of your original playing - great if you use a bass line. I find a simple bass line seems to drive JS well, with fewer unwanted complications than a keyboard, for example.

Well, I searched the Cubase LE manuals and there is no mention of a midi send, or of a ghost facility. It's a free version, made in March 2004. I sent off a coupon for it that came with my Tascam US-122, so I guess it is not so feature-rich as the current commercial offerings. I'll be happy to live with the duplicated track method.

Thanks again, cheers
TB.
