With Jamstix 1.03 and its support of time signature changes comes the ability to create projects with odd quarter-based time signatures.

All you need to do is break-down your time sig into a combo of supported sigs (1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4) and set this up in your sequencer as alternating time sig changes. For example: for a 5/4 rhythm you'd alternate 4/4 and 1/4 in your sequencer.

Hi Zauni - I've just got the demo version, which so far is great!

Could you tell me where to find the drop down menu for time signatures please? I've got a few 3/4 songs (pop/country, not waltz!), but the closest thing I could find was 6/8 in a key words list. Is 3/4 censored in the demo, or am I not looking in the right place?

Thanks Very Happy

There is no sig selection in Jamstix because Jamstix always plays the sig of the sequencer. The rhythm library only has a few 6/8 rhythm. If you want 3/4 rhythms, set your sequencer to 3/4 and let Jamstix free jam.
If you want odd time sigs, set up alternate time sigs in your sequencer that consist of 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4. Example: for 5/4 alternate 4/4 and 1/4.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Zauni, it does help lots. I haven't used the rhythm library yet, so I'm not sure what it does, and I know it's not super high on your priority list, but a few 3/4 selections there might be nice also.

Having said that ... thanks for all you do Very Happy Very Happy

Ralph:

Not all sequencers can alternate time signatures in the way that you describe in initial post. In FL Studio, for example, you build a playlist by placing patterns you create on a playlist editor. You can set a default project time signature, which become the default for each pattern. And this needs to set to either 3/4 or 4/4 for JS top be happy. This default TS can be changed for each pattern, however, and these patterns are then placed on the playlist. Kind of funky, but it works. The problem is that Jamstix thinks that it should be playing in the default TS for the project. So when a pattern that is in an odd meter come by, it merrily goes on its way in 4/4 or 3/4. For one or 2 bars of an odd meter, you might able to make it work, but for a whole song in an odd meter, it does't cut it.

The only solution I can see is to be able to place the default project TS into the odd meter desired and have JS be able to follow it. Will this be a feature of the product any time soon?

Hi Bill, Jamstix plays whatever time sig is reported in the VST interface. It sounds as if FL reports the default TS in the interface so there is no way for JS to find out what the pattern TS is.

We will have to wait for Jamstix 2 next year to get full odd time sig support.

OK. As long as odd meters are on the radar, JS 2 sounds like "anytime soon" to me. I'm still ecstatically using JS in 4/4 and 3/4. It will take me a while to plumb the depths of the current version...

Well, 12/8 is effectively 6/8 + 6/8...

I just noticed this program the other day, looks very interesting, but I am concerned that time signatures are going to be a bit limited... I frequently use odd rythms like 7/8, 5/8, 11/16, and many others. I use Sonar which handles odd rythms niceley, am I to understand that Jamstix will follow the rythms as provided by Sonar? I don't expect the stock rythm library to come with such off the wall time sigs, but can I add them myself, and build up a library of such patterns?

Hi Obscurus,
Jamstix currently only supports compounded signatures of 4/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 6/8, such as 7/8=4/4+3/4. This has to be set up in the tempo track of the sequencer as a 4/4,3/4,4/4,3/4... sequence.

5/8 and 11/16 will not work because they cannot be constructed from the above.

Jamstix 2 next year will have extended capabilities in the odd time sig arena.

PostPosted: Mon Dec 19, 2005 1:21 am    Post subject: how do I get Jamstix to follow time sig. in Samplitude? Reply with quote

I'm unable to get Jamstix to follow odd time signatures settings in Samplitude.

RIght now if I set the time sig. in a RAW VIP project (no MIDI or audio track), and during playback, if I change the time signature in the transport window, Jamstix goes back to default 4/4. I've tried different 6/8 presets, etc. with no change in Jamstix.

Is there a trick? Something I'm missing?

Still searching through all the forum threads on this (and re-reading the manual).

Thanks,

Greg
