We did this track as an experiment - come up with a drum track that is very hard to jam to in terms rhythm, and see if we could. On this track, we used Gavin (my favorite drummer in Jamstix, since i'm a huge Porcupine Tree fan!) and Euclid extension. It turned out unusually awesome and atmospheric, especially considering this is just two guys playing!

Until now I heard the first six minutes. Impressive these drums, I must try something similar. What did you do with Euclid (more or less)?

nothing special. it's the second Euclid style (not the Euclid Backbeat but one after it - blanking on the name), and i've set it to produce different numbers of beats/hits for different parts. i just set it up so that it sounded vaguely like a backbeat but not really (i.e. number of beats around 24-26, number of hits around 8-10), jacked up throw-ins and accents here and there, and let Gavin do his thing. when you have three minutes to prepare a drum track, you don't tend to overthink things Smile

the sound itself is not Jamstix, it's Steven Slate Drums 5 free edition. and just to be clear - this is not a "recorded" track, this is a recording of online jam, no overdubs or re-recordings, just some light editing.

Great, thank you. I liked the groove.

I absolutely love the jams you guys do! Jamstix may just be a sequence of static bytes on your hard drive but I choose to believe it is smiling when you let it provide the background for your creativity in these online jams.

Are the part changes in JS pre-programmed or do you use Liveloops to switch as needed while you jam? Do the other musicians know the different drum parts in advance?

Jamstix smiling at me sounds slightly unnerving Very Happy thanks for the kind of words!

it's the "Epic" preset on loop Smile so yes, they're preprogrammed. essentially, every track we ever play has the same structure, but because Jamstix is such an advanced piece of tech and allows for so much variation between parts, it doesn't sound like we're playing the same track over and over. i would love to use live looping mode, but i want to play myself and not to think about what the drummer plays...

no, they don't. pre-arranged music doesn't work well in online jams, because essentially everyone hears their own version of the jam (because of artificially increased latency). so, we just go with the flow.

The even more unnerving thing is "What happens when Jamstix gets angry?" (gratuitous "Sphere" movie reference...)
