|
|
I am playing around with SM Drums. It has 2 rides and I want to add a 2nd ride to my modded MIDI Output Template kit.
When I right click on the Drums screen, I do not see an option to add another. I do see options to add other pieces to the kit like a 2nd snare.
Thanks

There is only support for one ride in JS4 at this time. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Brian,
You could add another Crash to the kit and change the sound to a different Ride cymbal model. You won't have the different articulations of a Ride but maybe it'll help. |

| The only issue doing what I suggested is that the Brain won't "view" the added cymbal as a Ride cymbal thus won't compose for the added cymbal as a Ride cymbal. You may have to hand edit to get satisfactory results. |

| Hello: not being myself a drummer and having very little knowledge about drumming, may I ask how and when a drummer would want to play with two rides? The only situation I can guess is by doing some kind of pattern or arrangement using both hands or maybe to have two very different tones. |

| Most drummers I've seen have different Ride cymbals just for tonal variations. |

Not an easy way but...
You can have 2 tracks with different kits (thus different Ride) and go from one track to the other via automation.
| Code: |
==== ==== ==== Kit 1
== == Kit 2
|
Something like that. |

i think that would be quite easy to do IMO. i could load the same kit and song on the new track, change the midi note for the ride to the 2nd ride, ctrl/click the ride so only it is played. it would be the same ride part but different ride sound. or create another ride part...
great idea.

I resurrect this thread as I switched since December from another sound library to SD3 (great piece of software I must say) and am experimenting and trying to learn it. I chose the kit "A New Era" from library Jazz Sessions to see if I can use it for a song I am working on. It happens that this kit has three rides: one "normal" ride at usual location and two more flat rides (without bell). One of them to the center-left (drummer view) and the other one to the right, even more right from the normal ride, above floor tom. Playing with some included grooves where the flat rides are used I can find some few that use the center-left one as crash, that is usign the "edge" articulation and not the "bow tip" one. It ends sounding like a soft crash. Very interesting.
I will take a look what it results if I try a mapping for JS4, using the already available ones as start point. I guess I must define them as crashes in the mapping. |

Hi Knopf,
I think I figured a way you could get this to work. Add Crash 3 & Crash 4 to the kit you're using if it doesn't have them and map them to one of the Ride cymbals in SD3. Add 2 Redirection Brain generators to the Brain, one set to redirect the right hand to Crash 3 and the other set to redirect the right hand to Crash 4. Vary to "Amount" knob to control the redirection to each Ride. HTH
EDIT: Actually this would probably work better if you assigned the redirection to the Jam Blocks and mapped those to SD3 instead so you still have all 4 Crashes available if needed. |

Hello Azimuth,
Thank you very much. But I am a little confused, I guess from ignorance. I thought I should simply add two crashes that are located in similar positions as the SD rides, and then map them to the SD rides using a file in the folder midimaps. Why should I use Redirection? Redirection from what in the right hand? I mean, those flat rides are used as light crashes in that kit. I am very interested in understanding your suggestion, though.
The New Era kit has, aside from the rides, two more crashes and a china. I thought I could map them as well to corresponding pieces. |

Hi Knopf,
Jamstix is going to compose Ride cymbal hits with the right limb so the idea is to redirect some or all of those composed hits, based upon the Amount knob, to the additional Ride cymbals in your SD kit. That's also why I suggested assigning the jam blocks in the JS kit to the Rides in SD. That way all of the JS kit Crashes are still available to be mapped to SD.
You can test this within JS itself to see what I'm talking about. Add the redirection filters as I described, in the Kit Editor assign 2 different Ride samples to the Hi & Lo Jam Blocks and vary the redirection Amount knobs and watch the result in the 3d Kit |
