Just a word of encouragement for you, this is a very interesting product idea! I look forward to trying out your demo when it's available, your audio demos are impressive.

IMO, your product's most important functionality is it's ability to interpret a score and trigger DFHS (or similar) accordingly. The market will surely reward you if it works as advertised!

For audio input users, you might direct them to try a good audio2midi converter and see if that get's them there (I know that's what I'm going to try). It might not work in live jam mode, but it might provide a non-realtime path for composers.

We're glad you're seeing it that way. We are musicians ourselves and love the sound quality of DFH, BFD and similar high-end products. Our goal with Jamstix is not to replace them but to complement them.

That sounds like a very good idea. After the initial release, we will allocate further development time to the audio jamming concept based on user feedback such as yours.

Of course I, too, can only encourage you. For years I have been waiting for a product like this ...

During the last days, several questions came to my mind:
What about odd meters? I love 5/8, 7/8 and 11/8-rhythms and good MIDI-files are very rare. So I trigger my samples really playing a Yamaha DD 14 digital drum - but as you can imagine, I'm by far not good enough to do some decent drumming. Therefor every opportunity to get some odd meter drumming would be appreciated Rolling Eyes

Second: Will the instrument always behave the same running over the same MIDI-part? Or will it change its response to what is played every time - like some kind of intelligent random pattern-generator?

Would be interesting to know ...

Initially, Jamstix will only be able to produce sensible results in 4/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 6/8. Based on user response, we will then expand into the 'odd sig' territory. It's a matter of allocating initial development resources.

When you jam with Jamstix, its decisions are recorded in the Arranger. After you stop the session you can play it back and all the decisions will be 'remembered' and, thus, the results stay the same. However, if you want to alter it, just click 'Clear Arrangement' and start over. Rhythms and decisions will then be different.

There is also a 'hot MIDI key' that you can set which resets the jam while you play. You may be jamming and Jamstix repeats rhythms it developed based on repeating chords you are playing and you don't like them: hit the hot key while you are playing and Jamstix will 'forget' it all and start over.

I see; sad, but I understand. Although I'll be desperately waiting for this development from the first day of Jamstix' existence.
Now that would be something REALLY new ...

That's ok for me Smile
I'm curious how to export those recordings into Cubase tracks ...

And one last question for now:
I guess there will be different styles of response - or will it all be pure jamming?

You can use the MIDI Out feature of Jamstix or use the 'Export To MIDI File' command in the Jamstix arranger

The free jam mode operates in the rock<->funk spectrum with various controls (syncopation, complexity, half-time,accentuation etc.)

The key word jam and manual jam operate with rhythms from the library (preset or your own), which allows you to use rhythms of other styles

In summary, Jamstix 1.0 will be focused on a modern drum style that can cover rock, pop, funk and R&B.

Fine - this MIDI Out option is extremely easy to use Smile

Ok - that will fit my personal style perfectly.
There is only one thing missing now - a working demo Wink

How are the mappings going to work? Is it GM drums only or will it trigger DFHS in "full feature" mode?

Mapping in Jamstix assigns logical sounds to actual MIDI pitch so Jamstix can trigger any drum synth correctly. In addition you can change the velocity response curve for each sound, which is handy when the hihat on one synth decays faster than on another synth and things of that nature. Mappings can be saved and recalled as needed.

Concerning the usable sound palette: the Jamstix brain must have a set knowledge of drum sounds due to all its built-in rules and rhythm generating logic, whether it is DFHS or BFD or the internal synth.

Let me get back to you with details on DFHS in a few weeks because we're still testing sub-hosting it and things aren't written in stone, yet.

Hey Zauni,

just to be sure: Jamstix does sync with its host's tempo, correct?

I too would really, really like odd signatures. I understand about resource constraints and just getting v1 out the door, but I'd love to have this put on your roadmap...

You see, Zauni, there's quite a market for you there.
All the Sample CDs, ROMpler etc. concentrate on 4/4 stuff - and all of us retro-lovers are ignored. But the world is not only dance, dance, dance ... I think even more users are as old as I am - the silent majority.
Keep that in mind and fill the gap the other companies left open for you Smile

Hi!

I, too, am very exited about your product. I have been asking for something like this for years, and I just wonder why it has taken so long for somebody to produce it.

How about support for swing/shuffle? You have no idea how sad I'll be if you don't support that. Wink
