Now that I've found the JS4 Manual, I've got to say that it's excellent! Clear and cogent with great GUI illustration juxtapositioning.
Anyway ... reading page 35 on the 'Feel Processor,' a couple of things are unclear.
1. Do the illustrated Snare and Hi-Hat 'Vary' controls adjust just the timing, or both timing and power?
2. Why is there no 'Kick Vary' control?
Thank you. |

| The information display at the lower left side of the GUI explains what the controls affect. |

Aha! So the info panel augments the manual. RTFMing is not enough.
FWIW there ought to be a sticky "How To Teach Yourself ST4" here with a link to the manual and a statement to the effect that some information is only available through the GUI info panel. It might save the Mods answering a lot of redundant questions.
And what about my question regarding the absence of 'Kick Vary?' Is there some reason this is unnecessary? |

The kick power variations are controlled by the 'Power Vary' setting. The reason snare and hihat are singled out is because those two often have special requirements. Example: you may want a lot more variation on the hihat but a lot less on the snare because snare variations on the main hits can be disconcerting depending on the sound and velocity response of the layers for the sound. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thank you.Now I just have to dig into the GUI and figure out whether Snare and Hat Vary affects both timing and power. |

It affects power only as it states in the status line when you mouse over them. Timing is controlled by 'Pocket' and 'Timing Vary'. The pocket control applies the given pocket amount in preset amounts to kick, snare, hihat and everything else. This is based on typical timings created by human drummers (i.e. the snare is affected more than the kick). The 'Timing Vary' control adds an additional random fluctuations on top of that. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
