Hi -

I was wondering - if I've created the parts for a song, then want to assign them to things like "Intro" ("I" in the song wizard), ... Solo ("S" in the Wizard), Breakdown ("X"), and Ending ("E"), etc. - is it possible to do that after they have been created?

Thanks very much -

You can name them anything you like, if that is what you're asking. You can choose "Intro" as a style or a "breakdown" variation of a chosen style. The others (Solo & Ending) are not specific styles.

There is some limited functionality where you right-click on an existing part and then select Part Type. The choices are Intro, Normal and Ending. I have not done much these though.

Hi Brian!

Thanks for pointing that out. I had seen that in my right-click journey, but hadn't tried it out yet. That is the next thing to do for sure!

Hi a_zimuth, thanks for your answer!

I'm on thin ice in terms of understanding here, so please excuse questions that are way off the mark, here goes ...

I had the strong impression that creating a song in the Wizard causes the drummer to automatically change his play style at each of the transitions between parts. I've only used that once or twice, but was immediately impressed by how much more alive that seemed to make the song. Examples of this were going from Verse to Chorus ("C", in the Wizard language) or from Breakdown ("X") to End ("E") - those seemed to cause very dramatic (and pleasing Very Happy ) changes in drumming. Similarly I think (though am less sure), going from Chorus ("C") to Solo ("S").

I've created a song, having forgotten to use the Wizard when creating the parts, and I am pining for that added realism of the drummer automatically switching up between parts. What I can't get past is that after I've created and named the parts ("normal" parts, created without use of the Wizard), I don't see how to then tell the drummer, "Hey, I forgot to use the Wizard, but this is a transition from Chorus to Solo, can you auotmatically change up the drumming like you would have if I'd used the Wizard please?".

Brian in the post above pointed out that after the fact I can assign the part to Intro, Normal, or End. But what about the other very cool labels like Verse, Chorus, Solo, Drum Solo, Break, Breakdown, End, and the like - after a part has been created, can I assign those labels to it so the drummer automatically changes his play style like he would if I'd used the Wizard to start with?

Thanks for any clarification!

Hi Alexis,
The "drummers" aren't doing anything special when transitioning from one part type to another. All they do is generate a fill based on how long your Transition Fill + Vary setting is set for in the Fill window. The thing that would affect the feel of the fill more than anything is whether you choose a "Groove" or "Freestyle" fill in my opinion. Song power automation can also have nice effect here also.

Thank you for the reply a_zimuth! Just to clarify, and to help me troubleshoot, are you definitely referring to parts created in the Wizard here, is that correct? I know what you wrote holds true for parts created in the left side of the window, in the "usual fashion", but I just wanted to make sure that you are also saying that it holds true for parts created in the Wizard on the right side of the screen.

If that is indeed what you're saying - I wonder what the purpose is of labeling parts in the Wizard with names like, "drum solo", "silence", "chorus", "bridge", "breakdown", and "end" is, if not to instruct the drummer to do something differently?

Hi Alexis,

When the Wizard is used to create the parts, choosing I,V,P,C,B,M,D,S,Q,L,X,OR E affects the way the Groove and Accent components of the part are composed but not the Fill. The Fill is mainly affected by RF or TF length and Vary, (and Simple, forgot that) and whether it is a Groove or Free Form Type. The Drummer model affects Fills the most IMO. This it true for manually created parts also.

Regarding what Brian pointed out those 3 choices will affect the part when it's recomposed. Manually creating a new part you can't choose a type like you could using the Wizard. However, you could take an existing Verse, Chorus, etc. that you like and export it as a style choose Import for your manually created part and choose the style you saved.

OK yes, that has been my understanding also ...

Hooray! I will give that a go, hopefully I will be able to avoid rebuilding the whole song again. Thank you for the recommendation, a_zimuth!! Very Happy Very Happy

Just noticed a mistake Alexis in what I said. "Save Groove as Style" is what I was referring to. It will rename the part you are savings' style to whatever name you save the style as. On your manually created part, you do not use "Import" style but rather the style you saved will be in the normal Style drop down list. Choose the style you saved there. Just didn't want to confuse you.

Ok, thanks a_zimuth, I read this before I got started. Much appreciated!

Hi a_zimuth!

Getting to try this now ... with a few more questions ... Embarassed

a_zimuth wrote:

"Save Groove as Style" is a bar editor command only as far as I can tell. I didn't find that command in the Part right click dialogue. I thought maybe instead that choosing "Save Part" there, and placing into a Style folder in Window's File Explorer (as opposed to the default Part folder that opens up) might work, but no luck (the Part name is not listed as a Style choice). So I need a little help there please, if you had another moment or two.

The bolded part is what I was referring to above - it doesn't seem to appear there.

Thanks for any help!

Thank you, a_zimuth, that clears that up entirely!

Last part I need to do is figure out how to link that up with the various song parts in Appendix C. Hopefully that's possible.

Thank you again!

I would just save a style for each part I liked and wanted to use. Name them so I could identify them, like in the gif "8th rock chorus", "8th rock verse", "8th rock link"..bridge..breakdown.. etc.etc. Then use them in the newly created parts of the same type.
