|
|
Fist Post -
Hi, I'm Jeff, a Jazz saxophonist and pianist.
I just purchased JS3 and am excited about the creative possibilities.
I'm a Luddite techno-donkey and need simple instructions on the proper set up for:
1. Ableton Live 9.6, JS3 and Kontakt 5.5. I'm using Kontakt for my sampled piano (Ivory Fazioli).
2. Same question, but add in Easy Drummer 2 (EZD2).
Currently, in order to get the "MIDI IN" yellow light to flash (thus signifying that JS3 is receiving MIDI input data from Kontakt (via my MIDI keyboard, a Nektar Impact ix61, although I'll eventually use my Casio PX5S or Kawai MP11 as well), I have to set the red "record" button on the JS3 track, as well as make blue (activate) the "in" for monitoring for that track.
What happens is that I hear both piano and drum sounds while playing piano. I don't mean hearing the drum track playing. I mean hearing individual drums as I depress each key on the Nektar (cymbal, bass drum, etc.).
Note: there are no "zones" on the Nektar to select different MIDI channels on that device for different purposes.
How do I make the drum sounds not occur while I'm playing piano?
Thanks! |

| Hi Jeff, Is this Jamstix' internal sounds that you are hearing with your Piano or EZ Drummer's? |

The keyboard-triggered drum sounds are being produced by Jamstix, not by Easy Drummer 2 or my keyboard. My Nektar keyboard does not have drum sounds.
The offending behavior is precisely what one would desire with finger drumming.
The offending behavior is identical whether or not Easy Drummer 2 is implemented or even present in Abelton.
The same result obtains with my Kawai MP11 digital piano, which features four separate MIDI zones, each of which can received different MIDI channels. It has a drum machine of sorts, but no individual drums. In any event, these are not being implemented, thus ruling that possibility out.
I also tried every possible combination of input , output, mixing, MIDI channel, etc. combination in Abelton that I could - still, the same result: if I want the yellow MIDI light on Jamstix to light up (signaling MIDI input from the keyboard), I get the finger drumming sounds.
This means (I think...) that Jamstix's sounds are being triggered by both the "song" that is loaded into it, as well as by the keyboard. For this particular implementation, all I want is for the "song" to produce the drum sounds, and for the Jamstix brain to vary those sounds in response to my piano playing.
For a different implementation, I would like the ability to do finger drumming to create a drum track from scratch, so it would be nice to know how to turn this phenomenon "on" and ""off."
Further, only once did I notice the "power knob" turn as it is supposed to. Then, it stopped doing that.
I'm sure there is a "duh..." solution to this predicament!
Thanks.... |

| It sounds like the Jamstix track is probably set to "omni" meaning that the track is set to receive data on all 16 channels. It needs to be set to a different channel than your keyboard obviously. I do not use Live so I cannot offer info on how to change that for you. Hopefully some of the resident Live users will chime in on how to change that. Also, do you have AudioM8 loaded on the track BEFORE Jamstix? |

As to MIDI channels, the following options are available:
1. On Jamstix itself, under "Options," then "Jamming," there are two (2) choices: 1. "Jam MIDI Channel" and 2. "Control MIDI channel;"
2. On Kontakt, the input can be set to OMNI or any of the sixteen (16) channels;
3. In Abelton, both the Jamstix and the Kontakt tracks can be set to either "all channels" or any one of the sixteen (16) individual channels.
4. In Abelton, "input type," "input channel," "output type," "Monitoring" ("in," "auto" and "off"), "track activator," "solo," "record arm," "send," and "center" are the available options.
Trying various combinations of the above has no effect. It seems as though having the keyboard (piano keyboard, not computer keyboard) input MIDI data for Jamstix to respond to must necessarily require that the said keyboard also function as a finger drumming input device. But, of course this cannot be so for Jamstix to function in its intended role.
I didn't find anything in the manual, but of course, I could have missed it. The "MIDI Jam" instructions are on Page 54, but don't address MIDI channel or these specific issues.
Thanks... |

"AudioM8" ---- No, I don't have it loaded at all! Does it need a separate track of its own? Do I need it with jamming to MIDI tracks, or just to Audio tracks?
What would I do - have separate tracks for:
1. Jamstix3,
2. Kontakt, and
3. AudioM8?
Also, I apparently must change the MIDI track for the KEYBOARD, not the DAW track that the keyboard's sound source (Konkakt, Ivory piano Fazioli) is set to?
Thanks... |
