I can't get Jamstix to work properly with BFD and Cubase SL 3.0.1.
This is what happens:
On tabpage Mapping, I load a BFD drum map, then locate the stereo dll, outputs are 4.
Once BFD completed loading after a while and shows up, but mostly I get access violations, sometimes an error message appears at the bottom of Jamstix. "Configure" never works.
No problems with BFD in Cubase. Internal mode of Jamstix seems to work so far.
If this issue gets fixed, I'm your customer
Best regards ! |

Hi voodoochile and welcome to the board!
Let's see if we can get this sorted out. We use BFD inside of Jamstix all the time and lots of users do as well without problems.
a) Are you using Version 0.99P of Jamstix (check about tab)?
b) Let's use these steps:
- load Jamstix
- go to MAPPING, click External VSTi, locate BFD stereo dll and OK
- wait until hard drive light goes out to indicate BFD is up
- click CONFIGURE and BFD screen should come up
- set BFD as desired and then hit SAVE in MAPPING to store your settings to a new mapping file that you can then load next time with LOAD instead of having to set it up again
Let me know how it goes!
There's also an alternative way in Cubase SX (not sure about SL). You can just put BFD into Cubase by itself, give it a MIDI track and then set the MIDI input of the BFD track to 'Jamstix'. However, the MIDI output in the Jamstix demo is limited to bars 1 through 4 so past bar 4 BFD will stop playing. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hmm... 0.99M is latest, isn't it ?

Ok so far, BFD shows up without need to click CONFIGURE
But now... gone again, I think what I did is simply change to the browser and back. Clicking CONFIGURE gives me an "abstract error". What is that ?
Removed Jamstix and added again, ok.
Again, If Cubase looses focus, Jamstix looses my settings, resets to "internal sound", clicking CONFIGURE afterwards opens an empty screen.
Cubase and/or Jamstix doesnt like this...

No problem with save and load, but the configure window won't reappear.
Another small issue: some message boxes dont get appropriate sized so you cant read all of the text.

There is an unpromoted P version that improves audio tracking but M is fine.

That's odd stuff. Is anyone else seeing this. Anyone else using SL?

What screen resolution do you have and do you have large fonts enabled? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Have been playing with this and I can reproduce the problem in Cubase SX. It does happen when Cubase loses focus while the external VSTi configuration screen is open. Doesn't happen in Tracktion or Sonar, it's got something to do with Cubase 'losing' the external VSTi window when losing focus.
We'll see if we can fix that. In the meantime, please close the configuration screen when you need to move out of Cubase.
Thank you! _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Voodoochile,
this archive has an updated Jamstix DLL that should fix your problems:
http://66.235.201.50/demos/jamstix099P.zip
With this update Cubase still closes the Jamstix GUI when it loses focus but at least you shouldn't have any errors anymore.
Let me know how it works! _________________ Ralph Zeuner

This is 0.99P, your product page says 0.99Q. However, both give me:
jamstix.dll: 2005/03/10, 6554521
Right ?
But it seems more stable - if I close the BFD window by myself before leaving Cubase. On returning the "internal" button got switched on although BFD is playing as I can see by opening the configure window.
"Access violation" is still there if I dont close the configure window.

Never mind.
No more problems with application switching!

Well, when I tried to load the Zeppelin arrangement I got asked again for the BFD dll, which shouldn't be ? Anyway, afterwards no more sound and clicking configure again causes bad violations...
But, this thing is cool, really cool !
I never bought myself a drumcomputer in all those years. Dont like static patterns and hate to edit midi scores.
This is really different.
Unfortunately, Cubase SL dont allow inserts while recording, but thats not your fault. Have to upgrade to SX if there is no other way to interact with my guitar playing.
One more question: the keyword jam mode
If I a load for example 1970s rhythms, there are several, shown up in the arrangement tab, but Jamstix only plays the first. Shouldn't there be a random selection ? ("use arrangement" is off)

We'll look into that

The KW jam won't start switching until it receives MIDI (if you are on MIDI mode). In audio mode it will switch every two bars.
Let me know if it still doesn't switch for you. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ok it does, but because my Cubase doesnt feed any audio input, all I hear is a low hihat.
Why the difference ? Anyway, not that important.
Is it possible to give edited rhythms new names and save them, so I can set up my very own arrangements (dont know because demo version cant save) ? How would I load and insert them into the arrangement score ?
The tooltip for rhythms names talks about double clicking to access the rhythm. A single click opens the rhythm tab, anyway, but it simply shows the wrong rhythm what is totally confusing. Seems that the GUI does miscalculate the mouse position or something like that.

In order to audio jam in Cubase, add an audio track and add the audioM8 plugin that came with Jamstix as an insert effect. This plugin will send audio information to Jamstix alleviating the Cubase audio routing issue.

Yes, in the full version you can save rhythms to the library.

|
Press LOAD in the rhythm tab and select up to 16 rhythms, click OK. They will all be loaded and show up in the arranger where you can then instruct Jamstix which rhyhtms to use for each bar, so it overrides your jump immediately.

You are right in that the tooltip should say 'click' instead of 'double-click', we'll fix that.
In order to jump to another rhythm, you must uncheck 'Use Arrangement' because this instructs Jamstix to load whatever rhythm is associated with the current bar.
I know this all seems a bit complicated but keep in mind that Jamstix must operate within a host environment and offers a manual arrangement mode as well as jam modes. However, we will continually improve the GUI and make things simpler wherever we can. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

The GUI is not bad - just have to get used to it. As I am a software developer by myself, I know how difficult it is to please every user.
Sorry, my English isn't the best, so what I wanted to tell you is, that you (or me) cant use the jump from the arrangement tab to the rhythm tab because it simply opens the wrong rhythm (first or second are ok, but clicks further down are misinterpreted). |

It works fine here but we'll look into it. Probably a font calculation issue.
By the way, your English is great! _________________ Ralph Zeuner
