I'm trying to evaluate JS as an alternative to buying MIDI packs. The demo will send a kick to the EZD synth.
How do I evaluate this? |

At this point I'll assume there is no interest in working out a way to try this.
I guess I'll go a different route. |

Before JS, I used AD. For a while I used JS to drive AD, but I no longer do. I stopped for two reasons.
1. JS has more articulations than AD. So you have to map different articulations in JS to a single articulation in AD. That's probably fine, but it made me feel like I was missing out on some nuances.
2. I could not figure out how to preview different drummers in JS while having the output routed to AD.
I think the JS sounds are great and work well for me. I like AD too, but I barely have time to use one program, let alone 2, so i rarely use AD anymore.
I believe you are finding the limitation of the demo, so I thought I would weigh in with my experience. |

Thanks, I appreciate your input.
Right now I have 2 drum synths; EZD2 and AD2. I bought EZD a while back with a few EZXs. AD came bundled with a DAW upgrade. That's how I ended up with 2.
I'm not a drummer. I'm not concerned about drum tweaking minutia. I'm looking for more variety at a high level. I like both of the synths. Between the two, I have a HUGE variety of kit sounds that I'm quite happy with. What I'm looking for is more variety in what I have available to drive them.
One option is to buy MIDI loops. The other is JamStix. My hope was that I would end up with more variety using JamStix AND be able to choose which of the synths I own for kits.
It's important to me that I not end up with something that *almost* works, requiring me to go back futz/fiddle/niggle around with the result.
I have specifically been thinking of picking up the Toontracks songwriter 6 pack, but that leaves AD collecting dust. I guess I need to find a 3rd party drum MIDI supplier that supplies their MIDI in both EZD and AD "formats".
Thanks again for the input. |

In your case, then, since you already know you don't need more sounds, you can evaluate jamstix based on the workflow. You would need only purchase the basic package, since you don't need the extra kits in the other packages.
What I love about JS is that I don't have to think about whether what I'm programming is realistic, meaning could a real drummer play it. JS does that for me. I just need to tweak the dials until I get the pattern I want.
There are some tutorials floating around that give a better idea of the JS workflow. It is not intuitive IMO. But it is learnable, and once you catch on, it's no more difficult than any other tool. |

I agree. That's what I'm looking for. I just want to be able to try it the way I intend to use it before I buy. |

Bob, since the demo is not time-limited, it converts all MIDI output to kick. I know that is a pain because it doesn't allow you to test-drive JS with other drum plugins. We're working on a solution for a future update.
If you're still interested in Jamstix, send me an email and I'll see if I can work up something to assist you in this. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
