Here's the current Jamstix beta. Use at your own risk. Any feedback is greatly appreciated as it helps us shake out the bugs!

Demo Users->http://66.235.201.50/demos/jamstixX5-7demo.zip
Customers->http://66.235.201.50/updates/jamstixX5-7.zip

New AudioM8 Plugin->http://66.235.201.50/demos/audioM8v13.zip

    X5-7
  • fixed an issue with rhythms being altered when reloading a project in free jam mode under certain circumstances
  • the fill start bar is now stored in the song data
  • decision data from projects saved with Jamstix 1.3 is now properly loaded

    X5-6
  • hihat panel variance slider now also affects ride cymbal
  • added hihat panel variance slider now also affects ride cymbal
  • added global velocity variance slider to the control panel that affects all sounds except snare and hihat/ride
  • added 'Always Ride' MIDI automation parameter
  • added option 'TempoMultiplier' to [General] section of jamstix.ini. This allows running Jamstix at a different tempo than the host
  • fixed arranger scrollbar buttons

    X5-5 Test Build

    X5-4
  • fixed constant note offset when using DSP-based plugins in conjunction with Jamstix by adding automatic timing offset control via audiom8. All one has to do is have audioM8 in the project (doesn't even need any input). Note that this is only necessary if you use DSP-based plugins with Jamstix and experience early notes from Jamstix
  • MIDI controller events are now passed on to subhosted VSTi (except Volume #7 since Jamstix handles that one)
  • added jamstix.ini option to alter the function of the 'Reset' button in the rhyhtm tab. If 'ResetToSilence=1' is specified in the [General] section, the reset button will set snare accents, tom accents, normal cymbals and power cymbals to 0.
  • should fix the crashes some users were experiencing with Live 5 when auto-open plugin windows is on

    X5-3
  • increased pass-through VSTi outputs to 34 (17 stereo) to support hosting BFD Ultra. (Note that DirectiXer cannot handle more than 32 outputs)
  • audioM8 can now be run in multiple instances and saves its mute status to the project
  • added support for MIDI CC7 so that standard MIDI Volume automation can control all outputs

    X5-2
  • fixed GM input mapping when using external VSTi
  • fixed BFD GUI not showing inside of Jamstix when loading more than one project with Jamstix during a single session with certain hosts
  • voice reduction has been modified to allow for more realistic sound of the internal engine at low reduction settings
  • added option to jam habits to toggle the switch to semi hats during fills, intros and endings
  • added a readout to the fill,intro and endings screen that shows at what quarter the selected item starts to make it easier to find something of the desired length

    X5-1
  • free jam randomizer now favors closed hats more
  • added function to load/save free jam settings (disk icon in free jam style panel title bar)
  • added function to load/save arrangements (disk icon in arranger title bar)
  • fixed MIDI export problems resulting in incorrect tom notes
  • fixed MIDI export problems when using DFHS mappings with LR samples in 'MIDI-Out Only' mode

Ralph,

I discovered this limitation of DirectiXer the night BFD 1.5 was released. However, I was wondering if it's safe to set Jamstix to 32 outputs and still load BFD Ultra. It seems to be working, but in the past loading a drum module with more outputs than Jamstix was set for would cause crashes or errors. I was wondering if Jamstix is now designed to "eat" the extra output from BFD. I can definitely live without the Cymbal 5 & 6 outputs, but I would like to use BFD Ultra to take advantage of the general purpose bus outputs and other interesting configurations. Like I said, on my initial test it seems to be working, but I just wanted to verify that this won't cause unexpected problems. And if it's not currently supported to use it this way, I'd like to request it as a feature. Smile

Jamstix can't really "eat" the outputs because outputs are buffers provided by the host (DirectiXer). If it appears to work fine, then knock on wood Smile

Yes, DirectiXer is the host for Jamstix, but then Jamstix is the host for BFD. So I figured that Jamstix would have control of what happens between the outputs from BFD and the point they are fed to DirectiXer, in the same way that DirectiXer has control of the outputs from Jamstix before they are fed to the SONAR. That is, I was thinking it would take the 16 stereo buffers provided by SONAR, and provide an extra buffer of it's own to BFD to satisfy it's extra output, and then just ignore the contents of that extra buffer.

DirectiXer itself is capable of providing a different number of outputs to the host than what the plugin provides. For instance, with BFD All, if I configure Jamstix in DirectiXer for 3 stereo and 14 mono outputs, it is providing 17 outputs to SONAR even though I have set Jamstix for 9 outputs. Since SONAR doesn't understand mono outputs, it is apparently converting the mono outputs each to its own center-panned stereo output, and so getting one amount of buffers from SONAR and providing a different number of buffers to BFD. In this case, it is providing less buffers to BFD, but it seems like it should be possible to provide more, and just ignore the data from the extra buffers.

Jamstix does not provide the outputs. It passes the ones given by DirectiXer on to the subhosted VSTi.

I see. Well I guess the time has come for me to start looking into writing my own VST adapter. Very Happy

Sounds interesting

Ralph, will we see any BFD Ultra mappings?

Cheers

I wouldn't worry about the missing outputs as long as you can live w/o those cymbals. If it works fine it works fine.

Well, I don't need the cymbals, but I'm kind of worried that BFD may be writing data into some area of memory where a buffer should be and that it will eventually cause bizarre crashes. It worked fine in the 30 minutes that I played around with it last night, but I'd hate to start configuring my projects around that configuration and then find out it blows up under certain conditions.

Anyway, with the number of annoying VST adapter problems I've encountered on all fronts over the last few years, I'm nearly serious about trying to write my own. I do have the C++ programming ability, and some degree of familiarity with other types of DirectX interfaces, such as DirectDraw and DirectSound, but what I'm mainly lacking right now is the time to do it.

We could also lobby Tonewise to up the outputs of DirectiXer...

I thought of that too, but since it has been so long since the last update of DirectiXer I had kind of gotten the vague impression that it wasn't being further developed at this point. I would imagine this would be a relatively simple change, though, possibly even just involving increasing a constant and recompiling. Since Jamstix and BFD have probably generated some increased sales of DirectiXer, maybe they would be interested in making the change.

I hope so, as I love working in Sonar with Jamstix and BFD

I dropped Tonewise a note. Will keep you posted on any response.

Ralph,

I pre-ordered Jamstix before its release, but until the last few weeks I never did more than toy with it because I hadn't begun my recording project yet. Now that I've begun, I want you to know Jamstix has made a tangible, fantastic difference in my drum tracks. What a gift you've given us!

I have a question and a comment about the betas (I'm not using them yet). The question is: Does "incorrect tom notes" refer to the fact that when using midi export one tom hit can be exceptionally long (like, 300+ quarter notes in some cases)?

The comment is this: if the answer to my question is yes, I feel the fix should be an official release and not in a beta labeled "use at your own risk". Your responsiveness to your user base is unsurpassed, both where support and feature requests are concerned, but I think bug fixes should be provided in official updates and you should just use betas to test new features.
