I am trying the Jamstix demo out and would like some pointers...

How I work... I am a songwriter who's always looking for a way to improve my demo's. Maybe knowing the way I generally work will give you an idea how to advise:

- Write the song at the piano
- Enter the chords into Band-In-A-Box
- Audition the song in BIAB with different styles and keys
- From BIAB, save a very simple MIDI version of the song that works well with VIRTUAL GUITARIST
- Save a second MIDI file of BIAB's best stylistic rendition of the song
- Import both MIDI files into Tracktion
- Assign the simple MIDI file to VIRTUAL GUITARIST
- Assign the other MIDI file's individual parts to SampleTank, SFZ or BFD demo
- Replace MIDI parts with loops, live players as needed

Recording live drums is not currently an option, although I can when needed bring in a live guitarist and or bass player. Getting MIDI drum parts, loops and Virtual Guitarist to groove is always the challenge.

Ok, so when I am ready to use Jamstix, my songs are already there as MIDI tracks and audio tracks. Sometimes the grooves (from VG and BIAB) are not quite matched. (The newest version of ACID seems to really deal well with synching diverse grooves but I just love Tracktion too much to switch) What is the best way to go about getting drum parts out of Jamstix from that point?

MIDI input - If MIDI - what part? BIAB's drum rendition? a rhythm instrument? All parts?

Audio input - If audio, should I send rough mix into Jamstix or a single part like guitar?

I tried playing with Jamstix to get an idea but it really has a lot of features. I tried to build an arrangement like the video demo showed, but as played the song, Jamstix kept changing what I had put.

One final question ... does the commercial version allow easy auditioning of rhythms?

Sorry this post is such a mess. All advice and pointers appreciated...

Rock

Hi Rockum and welcome to the board!

There are two different ways of using Jamstix: jamming and arranging. You can use either methods or both (first jam then arrange).

Jamming (which involves routing MIDI or audio to Jamstix) is something that I would not recommend to you for completing an arrangement at this point, at least not until you are more familiar with Jamstix.

I'd recommend that you simply add Jamstix to the Tracktion project and not route anything to its input. Click 'Free Jam' and set the funkiness and complexity sliders to whatever tickles your fancy. Set 'Accentuation' fairly low (you can raise it later) and set fill frequency to 0. Now play your song. If you don't like the rhythm Jamstix is developing, change the complexity and/or funkiness settings. Once you have something useful, switch to 'Manual Jam'. Now you can add fills, intro and ending. You can also mute bars where applicable and add rhythms from the library.

Even the demo allows that. Just use the note icon in the rhythm load dialog.

Hope this helps!
