If there were some way to group used rhythms rows at the top or bottom, or simply 'protect' any given row from being overwritten by Jam mode, it would allow me to bring Jamstix more powerful features further into my song writing process.

We'll look into this and see what we can do for JS1. Jamstix 2 will have no pattern limit so that will make this a lot easier.

Another arrange request- could the viewing position for the arrange window be released from the host's current position? That way you could pan back and forth to see which rhythms are being used for what without having to play through the song. (You can, in fact, already do this through a whole song, four bars at a time, by moving the green bar indicator to the edge of the screen, scrolling over, and repeating... but it hurts!)

Just hit the Stop button in Jamstix and the arranger window can be scrolled. When you hit the button again it will synch back to the host.

One more thing - possibly already in the product - can Jamstix's velocity levels be set to follow a CC track, independent of the actual drum patterns? In other words, could I control Jamstix's velocity during playback of the song with a MIDI knob, with Jamstix still played its own pattern from its arrangement (and record that MIDI as well, of course)? This would be COOL...

It's there in several ways:

#1 Use a MIDI automation envelope on 'Velocity'

#2 Click the icon that Papatomany pointed out to set a CC

The CC method is especially useful if you have a foot controller and would like to control the velocity live while playing an instrument with Jamstix.

What happened to the planned "save to .wav file" enhancement, or am I just behind in the beta downloads? Thanks

Hi Ralph,

I was thinking about a feature that would be nice to have;

The ability to add dynamics to the arrangement as a whole by marking the first and last bar and based on some predefined formula have jamstix for example play more minimalistic during the first third of the song, then switch to more complex patterns during the middle third and then either "fade" out during the last or finish with a bang.

Another predefined parameter could be to gradually build up the complexety of the drums during the song until some some point which you could either choose beforehand or let JS determine for you where it would reverse the action and gradually play less complicated until the end of the song.

This can probably be achieved as it is with some tweaking, but in the spirit of Jamstix, it would be nice to have this as an automated feature. The examples i made above is just few of many possible combinations and could be expanded greatly.

This could also be achieved by for example choosing "free jam" mode, then setting the parameters for the general song dynamics without having to mark the bars so it will happen on the fly.

Regards
Jonas

Hi Jonas, thanks for your suggestions! We have plans for Jamstix 2 that include functions close to what you are describing. We will present more detail at an appropriate time.

I just got Jamstix and am really lovin it so far. The only thing that's really bugging me right now is the tiny Input Velocity Map. I don't feel like I can accurately draw any lines in there, it's just too small for me. Maybe if it could be made expandable that would be nice and also if there were volume markings on it.
Also, I find it annoying that when you change it in one song, the map is changed for all your other songs. I think it might be nice to have custom tailored maps for individual songs. It's just annoying to have to reload a map everytime I open a new song. But I guess this might be annoying for people who use one map for every song, so I'm not sure what the best way would be to do this. Maybe an option to make the current map the global setting or just for that one song? I don't know, all I know is that I think it should be bigger. Smile

I also second ci1874's idea to have "protected" rhythm slots so I can go back to FreeJam mode and let it come up with some more rhythms for me after I have a few parts down.

Kind of related to this, is there a way to move the rhythms around in the arranger window? Like I want to move both the actual rhythm and the little arrangement blocks for that rhythm up or down? I'm often left with a big mess right now.

Yes, we have that on the list also.

I need to update the list in this thread...

Related to that, is there a way to copy and paste the free jam in one measure to another measure in the arranger? If JamStix has nailed a particular measure I'd like to be able to paste it to additional measures. Maybe this is possible and I'm just not seeing it...

Thanks,
Neil

Method A) Switch to manual jam and then just click on the bars in the arranger to set them to the same rhythm slot as the bar you like.

Method B) Switch to manual jam and use the 'Copy' action in the arranger to mark one or more bars, then go to the bar where you want to insert them and hit 'Paste' in the arranger.

Method C) Stay in free jam mode but lock the bar you like and then use copy/paste as in b) to copy the locked bar to other bars

How about this for size;

When jamstix is opened you will be asked if you want to go with a "wizard" mode or "freehand mode"

"freehand mode" being default is it is now.

"wizard mode" would be where you define how many parts the song will be, ie 5: intro, a piece, b piece, chorus and outro.

Then you do on to define the duration of the whole song, let's say 5 min and JS will automatically index the song accordingly.

What the general style is, if you want a busy beat, a minimalistic beat or both or even what parts should be busy, not busy or in between and so on.

Dynamics for each part of the song etc. the possibilites are endless, but i think this would be a nice feature.

Basically "wizard mode" would be a template that you can add to based on different parameters.

Is this feasible?

BTW great to hear the the dynamics feature (or something close to it) i mentioned will be part of V2!

Jonas

Hi Jonas,
Thanks for your input! We do have plans for a wizard type arranger function for Jamstix 2 that should do much of what you've outlined.

Hi Zauni,
I just bought Jamstix two days ago and I'm very pleased about
the useabillty and easiness of it!

I have one question:
I would like to import some drum & percussion samples into jamstix from
other libraries, how can I do this, I would need sometimes different
percussions for songs, but would like to keep the rest of the drums.

Regards,

Thor

Hi, Thor!

There is currently no such import function in Jamstix. I recommend using a sample player with custom drum sounds inside of Jamstix (External VSTi).
