I came up with a novel way of auditioning fills in the Jamstix 1.3 demo.
Start with a new empty arrangement. Add the fill 1 in bar 2. Add fill 2 in bar 5. Add fill 3 in bar 8. Add the remaining fills in sequence every three bars until all the fills have been added to arrangement.
In Cubase (or any audio software), I set the play tempo to 80bpm. This is a nice mid-tempo for this purpose. With the metronome click on or off (depending on your preference), press play. You can then hear all the fills play in sequence. This gives me a good context to listen to the fills. The 80bpm gives me a good idea what fills may work for different tempos. Of course, you can change the tempo in your audio software to listen to the fills in different tempos.
The reason I added the first fill in bar 2 was to give four beats before the start of the first fill. Allowing three bars between the remaining fills allows the bass drum and crash time to completely fade away and also clear the audio palette.
Hope someone finds this useful. Keep Jammin'! |
