|
|
]I use Reaper regularly, but in very rudimentary ways. Mainly hosting Omnisphere, Trilian, IvoryII vsti for live play and generating background for keyboard work. There are frequent Forum posts complaining about the metronome and wanting better choices (not simply sounds, but other capabilities).
In a current Thread, this post appeared ___ Here's a curve ball that I tried, and it's how I do this now. It's a little more work, but the end result is usually worth it.
I stopped using a metronome, and I purchased EZ Drummer Latin Expansion pack. Instead of using a "BONK-bonk-bonk-bonk" sound, I''' insert 2 MIDI tracks- one with cowbell and the other with a percussion loop. The result is that drummers (and other players, too) tend to play to it more "musically" and naturally, rather than rigidly. It also seems to level the playing ground with drummers who have a hard time with a click and those that play well with one. And, since you have two separate MIDI tracks, it's fairly simple to raise or lower the constant cowbell sound to taste for each of the players.
Just a suggestion- it's one I never considered until a drummer in my studio suggested that "it might be more fun to try a percussion track" one time, and I've been hooked on it ever since.

I want to try this using JS3 and probably Jamcussion choices, but will surely labor a bit trying to get something working properly. Has anyone here done this effectively and willing to post some simple, proven steps to lay down a song or two to save as standard click tracks/metronomes?
I mentioned (on Reaper Forum) that I would be attempting this, but no additional comment so far.
Thanks and regards,

Am I way off base to think this is a popular and oft done way to do custom metronome ? I'm just a bit unsure how to set-up the midi tracks and select some 'ideal' drums and cowbells to mimic what the Reaper user posted.
Ralph ...... you use Reaper capably. How do you set up the metronome or click tracks much of the time

Personally, I use rigid beep-type click tracks for optimal timing. You can use Jamstix instead simply by using a style like '8th Rock' and 'Machine' drummer. For Jamcussion, I'd hand-edit a bar and then use 'Turn Groove Into Style'. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thank-you Ralph. My solo play (in today's digital music era) deprives me of perspective of different approaches for group sessions. The Reaper Forum poster's comments led me to ponder possible advantages (which he mentioned) of getting away from more 'mechanical' click track usage. You clearly see it from the other side and I appreciate your comment.
