I have a song where the drums just play some hits and accents in specific places for the first 16 bars, then the groove starts.

Do I set the first 16 bars style to silence, and then manually key in the earlier hits? Not sure how to go about this.

Hi,

Manually enter the hits in the bars where you want them and then Lock the bars (Blue Lock icon right of the bar editor) to prevent the drummer from changing them. That should do it.
