|
|
I've spend hours trying to instruct Jamstix 3.5 to play the intro of The Beatles "Come Together". I got the kick to play ok, and sort of likewise with the short high-hat (4 triple hits) that follows, but the tom roll I never managed to get down. Again the toms sound like they are thirds or sixths.
The editor was no good at either the high-hat or the toms because they are triplets, which I don't know how to program (can I?). Instead I used the Learn function to record in the part from MIDI file and play back the MIDI file into Jamstrix. Unfortuately not all of the tom-hits would be learned?!
I had the "MIDI qualtize" option disabled. I tried with 83 bpm and 166 bpm.
Any advice would be much appreciated, so would a Jamstix Song with just the intro so that I can see how it's done?
I'm kinda stuck here. Unfortunately, this is most often what happens when I try to use Jamstix to make a cover of a song. Maybe I just havn't figured Jamstix out yet? Anyhow, this is unfortunate as I'd like to use Jamstix in a way where Jamstix adds "real drummer feeling" (to a hard quantized midi file of the part(s) or similar) while still maintaining enough control to stay true to the original structure of a songs fundamental parts.
Thanks |

The key to 8th triplets in the editor is to place three notes on the first, second and third tick of a quarter note block (4 ticks) and then marking the second and third note SHUFFLE|FORCED using the bar editor menu. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I got around this in another way. In fact these are more like 16th triplets and it occured to me that few humans can play this fast using only one hand. What It did was that I used the editor to assign both RH and LH to the job. To get the triplet feel I used the timing mode with +24 and +48 off-sets, which both makes sense and sounds right.
Thanks for leading me in the right direction. |

I've got the same song ("Come Together") loaded up as a guide for one I'm working on, and I also have a question please re: the toms:
I cannot make the JS3.3 toms sound as: soft ... muffled ... controlled as the ones on that record. The JS3.3 ones in my hands just sound so "boingy". I tried various combinations of turning the kit volume down, turning the bar editor volume down, playing with the ambience, playing with the dampening, and I just can't get it right.
I know adjectives can exasperatingly imprecise, but the above is the best I can do ... Jasperhb_ , did you get that sound down during your mockup? Can anyone else help me here - specific knob positions on specific controls? I would be so grateful ... thank you! _________________ Alexis

Hi Alexis,
To be hornest I never got that far. The project is still sitting in its initial phases on my harddrive
Listening to the original it sounds to be like The Beatles are running the Toms (all of the drums actually) through a compressor and slamming it pretty hard. So my own approach would be to try and match the tone of toms sound as close as I can with the kit and then start playing around with EQ and a vintage compressor of some sort to try and "get that sound".
Also, check out YouTube for using compressors for drums. There are tons of videos on this sort of thing out there.
I hope this helps? |

The toms in the original have very short sustain (heavy tape use and head type). I'd recommend using the JS2 toms (Studio X), dampen them in the kit editor, EQ and compress to match. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yes, Ralph that kit is MUCH better for this purpose (I'm not trying to do that song, just to get that tom sound). Thank you!
BTW, this is how I swapped out toms, just wondering if it was reasonably efficient or if there is a much better way:
1) I had Mapex XL loaded.
2) I deleted all the toms.
3) I loaded the JS2 kit you mentioned, but put the filter to "toms only".
4) Renamed ("Save") the "hybrid" kit.
So now the displayed kit is Mapex XL, except for the toms, which are Studio X.
OK way to do it? Thx! _________________ Alexis

Ok way to do but you could have skipped deleting the toms. The toms-only load overrides them anyway. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
