Hi - sorry, I couldn't fit the whole question in the title bar:

"Why do you use other drums (like Steve Slate, BFD, etc.) in combination with JS3?'

Is it because the overall sound is better with those other brands of drum packs? Or they take processing better than the JS3 packs?

The JS3 drums sound pretty good to me, so I was just wondering why people might be supplementing them.

Thanks!

I use slate 3.5 because they sound sensibly better than JS3 sounds (I have all paks) to me.

Simple as that.

I use SD2 in addition to JS3. I have all the JS expansions but sometimes I prefer the SD2 samples, cymbals usually. It really depends on the track I'm working on and what gives me the sound I need faster usually. JS3's samples would be perfectly acceptable 99% of the time.

Useful to hear for a fairly new JS3 learner ! Lots of temptations to add other popular offerings like SD2, SSD, ....., but feel I do not honestly have the background to evaluate key differences. I would often just grab another sample quickly and not truly improve the result in meaningful ways.

Maybe after lots more work and experience with the huge number of JS3 choices ........

Thanks,
TB

Unlike many sample plugs the JS samples are for the most part "dry" as recorded. You can use the plug in effects that come with most DAW's to get the sound you want (which is my preference actually). Although I do use other sample sets sometimes to A/B compare my presets or just for kicks. YMMV Smile

It comes down to what works for the song with me, I,ve just finished mixing a 14 track album ( not mine ) and all the drums were done in JS3.

10 out of the 14 tracks i used the JS3 samples and they worked great but on 3 songs i used Superior drummer 2.0 and 1 song was BFD eco, i really like the DW kit in BFD eco.

Its just a case of what works best in the context of the song.

Well, that my 2c anyway Smile

Cheers

JS3 sounds are great in their own way, to me they sound the most "live", or most closely resemble what it would sound like if I were standing in the room with a drummer playing along with me.

That being said, I don't particularly find JS3 sounds useful for production, I used SD2 for a long time, but finally tuned into Steven Slate and the wow factor of slate drums is just what I need.

Its all good, just depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
