|

Hello. I am looking for something with a bit more realism than Fruity Loops. I tried downloading the demo but don't know how to get it working in Sonar 4 Producer edition, which I bought only three weeks ago (don't know version number). I did get to watch the four two-minute movies, however, and was impressed with Jamstix.
My question is how much control does one have over actually telling the program exactly how to do certain fills at certain times? Is that easy to do? Also, does Jamstix come with a good-sounding library of drum sounds or must one buy one such as DFHS? Finally, can one chart out and view the drumming patterns of a whole song in the vein of Fruity Loops' step sequencer and patterns views?
Also, can anyone tell me how to get Jamstix working with Sonar 4 Producer (I'm not familiar with it yet) and whether Jamstix can run as a stand-alone program such as Fruity Loops? What is the DirectiXer 2.5? Do I need that?
I think the program's pretty solid and probably what I'm looking for, but I think answers to these questions will help me decide whether it's right.
Thank you much,
Brian |

Jamstix has an arranger window where you can assign a fill, intro or ending to a specific bar as needed (in addition to the auto-fills). You can preview fills and switch them as desired but you cannot edit the notes of the fill itself.

I'll leave it to Jamstix owners to comment on the quality of the JS sounds but they do not compete with libraries like DFHS. Those will cost you $269 whereas Jamstix is $99 for the plugin so you are pretty much getting the JS sounds for free.

The arranger and rhythm tabs in Jamstix will allow you to see and edit your drum patterns and also see and edit the flow

1) Download the latest Jamstix DLL here http://66.235.201.50/demos/jamstixX4-21demo.zip
and overwrite your existing one.
2) Run the Cakewalk VST wrapper that came with Sonar and add the location of Jamstix to its search folders. Let it scan and it should list Jamstix as a found VSTi
3) Open Sonar and choose Insert->DXI Synth->rayzoon jamstix. OK the next screen. Jamstix should open
5) As a quick test, click 'Free Jam' in Jamstix, arm a track in Sonar for recording and hit Record in Sonar. After a few beats Jamstix should start grooving.

Can Jamstix run as a stand-alone program such as Fruity Loops?
|
No, Jamstix is a VSTi plugin and needs a host. There are some hosts (like MiniHost or SAVIHost) that will give you stand-alone feel though.

I answered that in my E-mail reply to you
Hope this helps. Let's get your demo going so you can spend some time playing around with Jamstix. We'll be here to help and answer any questions. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Brian, You'll be able to judge the drum sounds for yourself once you get the demo up and running. I personally find the included drum library to be quite good and all I need for now. I’m using Sonar 4 PE as well and Ralph’s detailed instructions above should get you up and running. If you do need some more help just ask. The cool thing about Jamstix is that it sells itself. I put it at the top of my list of the best music related buys I’ve ever made. (And I've made a few ) |

| I was running JamStix in SaviHOST as a standalone today and it was working really well - only when I changed the BPM, the playback stopped and I haven't been able to start the playback again since then. How can I get it started again? |

You mean even if you quit SAVIHost and open it again it still doesn't work? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yup - that's what was happening.
Then I figured it out. Clicking the # of BPM in SaviHost starts and stops Jamstix. That's probably obvious, but it was over my head at the time. |

I also agree about the quality of the drum sounds. They might not be the best out there, but they sure are very realistic sounding. In fact I have Native Instruments drum samples and tried using them with Jamstix and I honestly liked Jamstix's sounds better.
The only thing that NI drums have that is better is they have a wider variety of sounds (a lot of percussive sounds that I don't use much anyway)
Nope, I can't see spending $300 bucks on drum samples, mic'ed 14 different ways in a specialized super-padded studio. Like most musicians I'm on a very tight budget, which was what attracted me to Jamstix. Best investment I made in a long time! |
