Jamstix looks exactly like what I've been wanting for years. However, I can't manage to get the Jamstix demo to do a single thing in SAWStudio with or without the Midi-Workshop extension. Can anyone give me any advice on making Jamstix work in my most beloved DAW of all time?
Actually, I can get one thing to happen. If I put the audioM8 plugin on a track with audio, the needle will jump around with playback. Jamstix itself doesn't seem to notice though. |

Unfortunately we have no experience with SAWStudio. Does it fully support the VST 2 specs? Does Jamstix load in it and if so, when you hit Play in SAW does the bar/beat display in Jamstix follow the host? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| I can't find anything in the docs about whether it fully supports VST2. There are sections in the help file about getting VSTi to work but it doesn't say which version. Jamstix does load but when I initiate playback nothing in the Jamstix window responds to that. Does that mean I'm out of luck? |

SAWStudio may not send VST time info which Jamstix needs to synch with the host. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Reviving this thread. I'm using SawStudio Lite 4.9A with Jamstix. Plays great so far. Only issues stem from Jamstix not sensing when the audio engine is no longer live. For example when starting up the host before engaging the engine, the Wizard will compose songs, left clicking an item in the song sheet allows editing, and left clicking a bar in the timeline jumps to that bar.
Engage the engine and Jamstix plays. Stop the engine and now Jamstix will complain when asked to compose in the Wizard section that you must stop the engine first. Also, you can no longer left click on an item in the song sheet or a bar in the timeline. The only solution is to close the host and restart it.
Any ideas? I'm sure other SawStudio users would like to be able to use Jamstix as it beats the pants off other drum vst/i's IMHO. Also Bob Lentini SawStudio/SAC creator provides super support and is always open to fixing issues with vst/i's.
Thanks

Honestly I had to take a hard look at where I would invest my money going forward. I decided SAW at $3k or whatever they were going to charge at the time was not it. SAW will always hold a special place in my heart as it was my first DAW (SAWPlus in 1996 for $700!!!) but Bob's strict adherence to old school hacker ways just left me wanting to invest in a more modern platform. Bob is great, even in 1996 I called IQS (as they were named back then) with a tech question and the gal put Bob on the phone to talk to me. Even getting VST support out of Bob was like pulling teeth. He views it as a vastly inferior standard (with fair reasons, as many developers do) and finally only succumbed due to pressure and market penetration of the format. His implementation is still a lot less compatible than most all other modern hosts.
Ultimately I found REAPER to be more stable, just as performant, cheaper, updated more often, richer in features, and compatible with modern standards. I am not trying to pressure you to switch nor am I trying to start a DAW superiority war, but the switch was my ultimate solution to this problem. For me, Jamstix was the final nail in the SAW coffin. |

Glad you're happy with Reaper. I understand completely. While I agree w/ most of what you said I'm happy with Saw. Since I'm 99% audio- issues with drag n drop MIDI etc a and even the above issues are not major for me though I'd like to have a remedy. Jamstix is just to get stuff down, not production. At worst rebooting Saw takes a few seconds.
Though I haven't used Reaper, I've used Cake to Sonar, Cubase to Nuendo, Samplitude and even Logic when it was PC and Saw's stability sold me. I paid $300 for Basic and traded that and another $300 with a guy for Lite so there's ways around the big $. Really the tools have to fit the job so you made the right decision for you.
Back to my questions though-
Ralph, Any thoughts where the trouble may be or ideas?
This just involves some controls and also I found I can't split the outputs although SAW sees multi out capability. No problems with playback, it's locked tight to the host |

It sounds as if SAW is not handling the host play flag in the VSTTimeInfo structure properly. The flag should be active when the host is playing (not just engine active) and should be reset when the host stops playback (again, unrelated to audio engine status). _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
Just as an update, Multiple outs does in fact work correctly in SawStudio. Maybe some operator error was happening there
Bob Lentini is checking his code as per your suggestion so I'm hopeful for a solution as others in the Saw community are expressing interest in Jamstix. Thanks, will keep you posted. |

As an update, SawStudio 5.0 just came out and the host state issue has been resolved. Previews are working fine as well.
Thanks for pointing the right direction Ralph
