I've inserted Jamstix v3.1 on a track in Reaper 4.12 and setup a basic groove. I'd like to connect the power knob to a midi fader and record automation for it.

I've gone into the midi learn on the plug in and made it learn which fader I wanted. I tried absolute mode, relative 1,2,3. The midi assignment works, but when I move the fader, the power knob doesn't move. I see the midi activity indicator light up on the track, so I know it's getting input.

Do I need to do something within JS to get it to listen to the midi fader?

For the power knob, I would use VST automation in REAPER on 'Song Power Level'.
